9/14 Romney gaffe of the day "'Middle-income' is $200K to $250K"

The man is a machine, I tell you, a veritable gaffe machine.

BOSTON (AP) — Mitt Romney is promising to reduce taxes on middle-income Americans.

But how does he define "middle-income"? The Republican presidential nominee defined it Friday as income of $200,000 to $250,000 a year and less.

It would appear that he trying to say that anyone with less than $250k is middle income. I'm sure many down on the lower end would dispute that.

If my income was in the $100k to $250k range I would consider myself in the upper middle income bracket at the least. And consider myself in the rich bracket. I would also be moving the hell out of the state I currently live to a better area of the country.

"wan't much."

Mitt Romney is walking, talking proof that you don't have to be intelligent to get rich, sigh.

...was households with incomes between the national median and twice the national median. That puts the middle class between $51,500 and $103,000 this year.

People above this range, who are still dependent on jobs for their income, are considered upper middle class. It's theoretically possible for someone to make $250k a year and still be upper middle class, but it's improbable. If you're making $250k a year and are still living on your paychecks, you're doing something VERY wrong.

Although I think his gaffe of the day is actually making a statement that echos the embassy statement he called apologizing.
This one is freaking bad too, I just think his sudden reversal beats it.

"Is $100,000 middle income?" Stephanopoulos asked.

"No, middle income is $200,000 to $250,000 and less," Romney responded.

The NO really sticks out....

I figure if that is middle income, I am in the extreme poverty category.

When I was teaching in college back in the '90s, we got on the subject of being rich. I asked my students what sort of annual income you'd have to have to be considered rich. The general consensus was between $200,000 and $250,000. No one even came close to getting to $1 million, never mind $20 or $30 million..

This was a state school in a blue-collar area. I had to explain to my students that the truly rich can write a check for $200,000 -- probably for a weekend of golf -- and not blink an eye. I'm not sure they believed me.
