WASHINGTON Top Republicans are evoking concerns about the rising national debt to pump the brakes on coronavirus relief, and Democrats are crying foul.
House Democrats are eyeing a vote as early as Friday on a $3 trillion package that includes aid to state and local governments, assistance for essential workers, an extension of unemployment benefits beyond July and another round of direct payments for families.
"We're taking a look at what we've already done we've added about $3 trillion to the national debt and assessing the effectiveness of that before deciding to go forward," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters Tuesday. "If we reach a decision along with the administration to move to another phase, that'll be the time to interact with the Democrats."

Democrats say Republicans are using the issue now as a pretext to reject additional relief, arguing that they weren't concerned about the debt when they passed the $1.9 trillion tax law or other coronavirus aid measures that helped businesses.

(15,353 posts)First - THIS BILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST ONE PASSED!!!!. Before the corporate bailout, before the small business loans, before EVERYTHING else.
I don't believe I have to point this out, but after you've given Retrumplicans everything they want is NOT the time to go back and request they support your priorities. That only works when the other party is acting in good faith. Retrumplicans haven't done that for over 100 years.
It's a hard choice, but this bill should have been passed first, and if the Retrumplicans weren't willing to support it, then you walk away and bring it back up for a vote when the Dow hits 1,000.
Retrumplicans don't negotiate. They will only be forced to the table when the 0.0001% demands that they do.
Second- the above lesson should not be one that Democrats need to learn over and over again.
That's why I hope Democrats understand that if the Supreme Court declares Donnie Shit for Brains "above the law", the only acceptable response is to starve the beast.
I understand that is a profoundly hard choice, but it really is the only way to get Retrumplicans to change their behavior.
Expected them to act like moral human beings acting in good faith is a fools folly.
