And that, in my view , is the key to understanding the Ahmaud Arbery murder.
The police forces in the US started in the American South as slave patrols. And given this background, as well as the centuries of foundational racism in the US, one might reasonably assume that these 2 white men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery saw a running black person and "knew" that this person was guilty of something.
And this happened at a time where the current occupant of the White House may be the most openly racist President the US has ever had. Not for Trump the coded racism of Ronald Reagan. No, Trump needed to go far past Reagan and abandon the coded racial language. Trump encourages racism, and xenophobia, and naturally, misogyny. It is a large part of his appeal.
So given this history, past and modern, Ahmaud Arbery could not have been running for exercise. That is only something that white people do. Arbery had to be running away from something.

One bit of anecdotal evidence. Years ago, I was in my home office dealing with a situation. Prior to my meeting, I was speaking to a younger letter carrier from the office, and we were speaking about conditions in the office. At one point, he complained that there were no good looking women in the office.
I gave him 3 or 4 names, and his response was that they were black women. I said I was sorry he was such a racist, and I moved on.
He later apologized, but I feel his apology was tactical.
Multiply that by a million, and this is where we are in 2020 in the US.

(269,157 posts)Before my eleventh birthday my best friend's mother (who grew up next door to my father) told me I was beautiful. My dad told me the same thing when I was a teenager. That was that. You couldn't tell me otherwise and then along came Mohammad Ali and James Brown. I said it loud - black and proud - black is beautiful.
I have found beauty in every race on the planet. Some of it is physical and others are just beautiful human beings.

Beautiful shines out from the person.
In the case of Trump, what shines out is hate.

(66,462 posts)Beautiful women exist in every skin color there is. My life has been immeasurably enriched by the appreciation of beauty in all its forms and colors.
But people with racist views can't see that beauty because it doesn't conform to the stiflingly narrow definition of beauty they've chosen to espouse.
They have no idea how much they are denying themselves by their willful blindness...

(269,157 posts)Decades ago, an eight year old boy asked me why are some people white and some black - I asked him if he ever asked that about flowers or different colors of green on trees. Then I showed him the colors black and white and asked him if he ever saw anyone who was either color. He is now a big man and still reminds me that I changed his thinking on matters race.
