My husband is the president of a national non-profit trade organization. This group has a convention every summer that brings hundreds of people together. To date, this group has not canceled their convention scheduled for July in Sioux Falls, SD. The board is scheduled to make that decision between June 1st and June 15th. It dawned on me this week that this convention could go on as planned! It could because these folks are as red as they come with most of them still calling the virus a hoax, stupid, an overreaction etc...I have to hear it every damned day on the phone at work. I should get hazard pay but that's another story.
My husband isn't one of these RWNJ's and I figured that he would get this thing shut down but so far it hasn't happened. My husband is a thoughtful person but he doesn't make decisions quickly and he definitely has a wait and see type of demeanor. Two days ago I said to my husband, "You know...if you go to Sioux Falls, you'll have to come home and quarantine for two weeks. You'll have to live in the camper in the driveway and stay away from me, our kiddo and our shop for that entire time. We can't jeopardize the family or our employees" He looked at me in disbelief. I told him I wasn't kidding. He said "Really?" and I said "REALLY". I left work and told him I'd left the CDC guidelines bookmarked for him on my computer and he could read it for himself.
He immediately began calling his board members to see where they stood on the convention. These people are from all over the country - most are from deep red areas and the business they're all in is chock full of the reddest repubs you can imagine. ALL of them are in favor of shutting the convention down ASAP. The reddest repukes on that board were all quite vocal about the virus, how frightened they are to get it, that the pResident is lying to them about testing and how tRump's got to go or we will lose countless more Americans.
We found out that one of these board members just got out of the hospital with Covid-19. He said it is the sickest he has ever been. He went on an anti-tRump rampage with my husband saying he almost died because he kept hearing that this was like the flu or a cold and he should just keep working, so he did. Another board member from GA has a wife who works in an assisted living facility where Covid-19 has killed half the residents - he is terrified she will get it and then he will too. He pointedly blamed MF45 for the mess we're in. He said he's never voted for a Democrat but he would vote for Biden because he, at least, would know what to do.
I thought this was all good news. Our camper is actually very nice but I guess my husband really didn't want to quarantine there for 2 weeks.

(14,855 posts)Thank you for getting the ball rolling with your husband too.
The comments by the board member who was sick sounds right. It's often a very unpleasant and long-lasting illness compared to the flu, and that has been downplayed as well.

(22,133 posts)and even more so, frightened by those who are so nonchalant about putting others in harms' way, if they chose to expose themselves (and in turn, others in their circle (family, friends, etc.)).
My SO works as an essential employee and thus has to go to work, possibly exposing themselves on a daily basis to the CV. I am nervous everyday. I pray everyday for us, and all others that this disease will pass all of us by, and just be a old nightmare.
Again, good for you for standing up, and protecting you and your husband. Your husband is a lucky man. I am glad that those you've heard about (caught the CV) are doing better.
Take care and be safe!

(82,849 posts)But for some reason, the decisions on relaxing the lockdown are being driven by small clots of the lowest information dunderheads walking around with suspiciously professional-looking signs. Even a lot of die hard Republicans aren't anxious to test their mettle against this virus.

(51,608 posts)The dude that was in the hospital had to share his personal story, but I am sure many will still say it is a hoax until they are in that hospital themselves.

(82,849 posts)I really hope the idiots who get sick make lots and lots of videos about how wrong they've been, and that each one persuades just one of the knuckleheads to leave off their stupid crusade. But it probably won't.

(2,596 posts)He stupidly believes that the economic engine of this country is only fueled by the stock market. He's too ignorant that the true economic engine of this country is its people. He nor other rethugs haven't seemed to grasp the concept that if you kill the people, you will kill the economy because there will be no one at work to make the engine run.

(23,322 posts)However...theyre thinking and talking about it. These guys have no clue what my husbands political beliefs are and the fact that they were offering all that bodes well and means theyre probably talking to others about it too. Baby steps. The ones that dont vote for Biden...eff them. Theyll get theirs.

(52,162 posts)it is, of course, cancelled. But even after the board wanted to cancel it took weeks to negotiate the ability to cancel without being killed financially. This was all back in April. The official announcement of the postponement to next year was mid April. Honestly, I don't know that we will be able to have it even in July 2021 since choruses can't rehearse without at the very least a stringent testing regime and we aren't seeing any hope of that until at least 20 January 2021 at noon.
MontanaMama
(23,322 posts)These cancellations are a big deal, arent they?
even the individual choruses who had to cancel seasons had a lot of work. I am on the board of mine and we are clearly not rehearsing now or for quite some time. On Sunday we have to start figuring out what going forward might look like. I am bordering on being despondent as to that.

(6,884 posts)or play anything except the radio (and a lot of that) - but dear heaven, if a whole chorus - or even just a substantial percent - came down with COVID - what a catastrophe! That could lead to suicides - of audience members, let alone members - from the sense of loss.
dsc
(52,162 posts)as did one in the UK. An article commissioned by a national group of teachers of singing said that we won't be able to have rehearsals of choruses until a vaccine. I am thinking a really good testing regime could work. But that said, it will be a long time.

(54,256 posts)Why would anybody want to have a convention in South Dakota?
Better than North Dakota, I guess.
MontanaMama
(23,322 posts)It was scheduled 2 years ago...and I agree! I wouldnt want to go there. That said, in this particular trade, conventions seem to get held in the heartland of this country instead of fabulous destinations. It has been one of my pet peeves for years. When Sioux Falls ended up being a Covid hot spot, I thought that would be the end of it. It took a while and a threat of camper life for a certain someone but now its done.
WAY better than ND.

Its going to be like Nixon. 2 years after he quit, you couldnt find ANYONE who would admit that they voted for him. It was like hed been elected twice by magic.

(205,467 posts)But the leaves are coming out on the trees, so I think that makes it official. And the flowering trees are blooming too - the few times I've gotten out to see them. I'm guessing that tourism is a lost cause this year here in the North Country, too bad this nightmare couldn't have happened back when we were snowed in since everything (except groceries and gas stations) are closed anyway, but we're keeping safe and glad to hear that you are, too!

Do people think that travel will be safe this summer?
We are such a jaded nation, we have no idea how diseases can spread anymore.
This is bad and will get worse.
Please everyone, stay safe!

I'll bet if we listen carefully, we'll hear similar things from his suppporters. Two in my life just showed signs that their brain cells still rub together, and called him out for the liar he is. The teflon is wearing thin. I think James Carville is right...people aren't going to vote for 4 more years of this.
