Amarillo is so screwed

Just today alone over 500 new cases came in due to the meat packaging plants here and bringing our total to 2,673 infected today.

We were only at 55 cases on April 2nd and now? Well...the math speaks for itself. At this rate, we will be at 10,000 near the end of the month. Amarillo is a small city with 200,000 people. No one here is taking this at all serious. No one wears masks, if you do, you're essentially narrowed out as odd or a freak. People just ignore any safety here.

Please pray, I work in stores as a stocker for one of our major cola companies and it's getting worse each day. I'm terrified and I know if I get this, I'm gonna die. Bad immune system and weight issue on top of it.

Love you all very much. Keep us in good thoughts.

Fri May 15, 2020, 07:27 PM
May 2020

Neatly slip the pantyhose in your face mask. The pantyhose acts as an extra filter as you breath to keep the Covidvirus out of your respiratory system and lungs.

*********

Researchers at Northeastern University have found that adding an outer layer made from nylon stockings to a homemade face covering can boost its ability to filter out small particles in the air by creating a tighter seal between the mask and the wearer's face. In some cases, that extra nylon layer helped homemade cloth masks match or exceed the filtering capability of medical-grade surgical masks.

"It really improved the performance of all of the masks, and it brought several of them up and over the baseline mask we were using, which was a 3M surgical-type mask," says Loretta Fernandez, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northeastern University and one of the scientists who conducted the research.

I live in Jax. It's not good here, but some places are really trying to prevent this spreading and then there are assholes who refuse to wear masks and walk right up to me, not even thinking about trying to breathe right into my face. I always wear a mask and when I'm at the grocery store or pharmacy and if someone is approaching. I turn around in the aisle and if not possible, I turn my back on them and put my arm over my face. Some people get it and step back or go to the other side of the aisle, some are totally clueless and look at me like huh??, and a few have apologized.

I'd love to go to the gym and work out and they are open starting on Monday, but I think that's really foolish right now so not doing it. I'll just continue with my little home work out program that my chiropractor and I worked out and stay home.

Where it's so white, it's like a 24-7-365 blizzard. It's so red, like a civil war battlefield. In 2004 I sported a John Kerry sign in the front yard. The next morning, sprouting like mushrooms after a rain, it was surrounded by Bush-Cheney signs. The whole block!

We all get together over the holidays and NEVER talk politics.

I live in the mixed race neighborhood of Arlington, but it's in the middle of an old growth oak forest and by the river so is usually peaceful here. My area went for Nelson in the last election, but it was narrow. When shrub was president, there were Bush signs all over, not so much for drumpf. There weren't even as many in 2016 as I expected. Of course there are a few trumpers who have signs in their yard still. We're mostly a mixture of old timey rednecks and minorities with a few white liberals. I have a couple of friends in Mandarin who're Democrats, but there sure aren't many.

Most Americans are deficient in Vitamin D because we don't get out in the sun as much as our ancestors.

I wonder if NAC (N Acetyl Cysteine) would be helpful.

"NAC can relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions by acting as an antioxidant and expectorant, loosening mucus in your air passageways. As an antioxidant, NAC helps replenish glutathione levels in your lungs and reduces inflammation in your bronchial tubes and lung tissue."

google Dr John Campbell and watch his videos. He has been talking about Vitamin D and its role in improving resistance in the respiratory system.

He believes this is part of the reason dark skinned people are more likely to be seriously ill or die from the virus: dark skinned people do not naturally produce as much Vitamin D as fair skinned people. He highly recommends daily dose of vitamin D, and spending a bit of time in the sun daily.

101. Vitamin D Also Regulates The Immune System
Sat May 16, 2020, 07:32 AM
May 2020

I learned this as an MS patient.
The thought was that a lack causes big fluctuations in immune system activity.
The spikes, for some people, cause the self-attack on the myelin.
The belief was, maybe it's changed 20+ years later, that the D stabilized the immune system's generation of interferons.
The theory was the gamma interferons were a bad actor in MS.
It also correlated to the demographics showing MS more common in regions where people spent less of the year getting sunshine.
So, what I learned fits with what you wrote.

I have a wonderful friend in Amarillo TX (owned/owns a printing company in Amarillo) so I am hopeful that he and his family are safe too (he helped me buy my first house, I'll be forever grateful to him). I have a lot of friends all throughout TX, so I do worry. Family has all moved away, but I still have lots of friends down there.

Wishing that you and others, be safe and well in the weeks to come.

Here in STLMO, we're just coming out of a stay at home order that lasted almost 8 weeks. Sure there's been a couple of gripes (not many), and everyone that I've talked to, are very supportive of the stay at home order.
Support has been actually very strong and widespread, and nothing like you see on TV, the protests against stay at home orders. I suspect that some of these protests aren't in fact, true protests but staged.

It was hilarious and very cool at the same time. These guys were old and you knew they learned their licks from 78 RPM records. The conversation went something like this:

"Son, is there something you'd like to hear?"

"Yeah" I said "How about 'Way out there'"

The ring leader of the band was sort of taken aback, and fixed me we a gaze. It was one of those moments that he knew that i knew old music.

He turns to the bass player and says "It's in the key of A" and proceeds to play it spot on, complete with lyrics.

I was floored and extremely happy!

So yeah, The Big Texan has a soft spot in my heart, lol

...not a soul but me and one stocker was wearing a mask. I asked the clerk why she wasn't wearing a mask. "we're not required to," she said. Maybe I'll start ordering my wine online.

45. Lets help Vercetti 2021
Fri May 15, 2020, 09:07 PM
May 2020

Oh man.

DU Folks: I am worried about Vercetti 2021 and would hate to be in his/her shoes.

Vercetti 2021: Is it essential you stay at that job and risk your life? Do you have any alternatives?

DU Folks: If Vercetti 2021 has to stay in his/her job maybe we can help bail him/her out of the job with contributions. If not us then who, right? I mean, this fellow DU person could die (of course any of us could, but this person seems to be at high risk).

I am of very limited means, but could throw in like $15/monthly on an ongoing basis. I know that is paltry, but if a few dozen or a hundred people could do what they could maybe it would help.

V2021: Please give us more info re your situation.

DU Folks: Does anyone else wanna get on board with this, if needed?

You'll be OK because you know how to protect yourself.

Stay positive, although I know it's hard.

Drink high quality caffeinated coffee and gargle with mouthwash every time you return home.

Wear fake glasses or shades to protect your eyes.

Stay safe and don't give up on following best practices just because everyone else is failing to do so.

My wife and I have driven through Amarillo many times; just a gas and lunch stop on the way to Albuquerque, so we don't have much to remember except the drive through the city.
The most memorable part, if you would like to call it that, is the smell from the cattle yard just a short distance beyond the west side of town.

I'm sure there's a lot to love in Amarillo, but crazies with no masks in a pandemic is not part of that...simply terrifying.

May God bless you and keep you and your family safe.

Even if others, ignore safety measures, do everything possible to protect yourself. Wear a mask, gloves, if allowed, and social distancing as far as you can. Take care, vercetti2021.

Do you think it's just a lag in reporting, or were there actually over 600 new cases in one day? Or do those counties report less frequently than once a day?

I'm in Texas, too. I get how the local and state upticks are worrisome all too well. My husband and one grandchild (2yrs old) are both high risk. Mind your hygiene and gear up as best you can.

All we can do is take care of ourselves and our loved ones as best we can. We have zero control over all the foolish mistakes being made right now.

Be safe! You'll be in my thoughts.

when (or shortly after) delivery trucks drop their load in the receiving area, which is normally during regular business hours. At night the stores have all of their own deliveries and backstock all over the aisles so merchandising vendor product is difficult.

I am seeing good research that is saying you are much more likely to survive if you are not Vitamin D deficient. It says that taking 2,000 IU a day gives you a TEN TIMES higher chance of surviving, than a vitamin D deficient person, and almost 40% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D.

Stay healthy- keep your immune system in top shape by eating right and taking vitamin supplements, including C and especially D.

The selfish, thoughtless individuals "proudly" or "defiantly" prancing around without masks - they're actually wearing a kind of mask when they do that, y'know. It's a "mask" that says "I'm SELFISH!" Proclaims it to the whole world. Out there in public for all to see. And they don't even realize it.

Also lets you know they're "Disciples of #Donaldgate"! How thoughtful of them!

if we got ill we might not be able to get care. The "peak" is still coming and may overwhelm healthcare.

Btw, you're not seeing people who are self isolating. That doesn't mean they don't exist, just that
they're staying home amap. The oldest generations were among the first people in the nation to self-isolate, weeks before the first government call for it. Somehow I doubt Amarillo folk are too stupid to connect the dots between age cohorts, preexisting conditions, and death rates.

Fewer and fewer masks, more and more traffic. It’s as if they think that if we just pretend it doesn’t exist, it won’t happen to us. I don’t trust the number of cases being reported, but when the death count starts spiraling out of control, maybe things will change?

I think if I were a healthcare worker, I’d be furious.

his executive order specifically for Potter and Randall Counties. This is so freaking stupid..

The only good thing I've read is that hotels are being provided for packing plant workers who test positive. But if the focus is just on the packing plants, they're missing the mark. How do you prevent community spread? This was going on before it was ID'd as a hotspot. They need more widespread testing of the entire community.

They need to revert back to essential businesses only. Of course, the gyms etc are opening up on Monday etc.

I hope they can contain the outbreak up there, but it seems like there is a huge disconnect between the community and packing plants.

In most states, even the other red ones, they aren't taking "all counties are the same approach".....But they are in Texas.....
