The thing about rushing a vaccine is...

that it's given to people who aren't sick.
If it hasn't been thoroughly tested it could make perfectly healthy people sick or kill them.

Trump is promising a vaccine before the end if the year.
If he pushes one out it certainly won't be proven to be safe and effective but he may still do it if thinks it could help his re-election chances.

Hope all the Fox News fans all rush out to get their Trump inoculation.

1. Anyone remember the H1N1 flu vaccine during the Ford admin?

A cautionary tale...

Google 1976, swine flu, vaccine, Fort Dix or some combination of those terms if you haven't heard of it.

2. Back in the late 60s, I heard some virologists talking about an early polio vaccine

that had been given to a large number of people: it was an effective vaccine --- but somebody discovered that the process of making the vaccine was also reproducing various other viruses that people were then exposed to. It was a Whoa! Wait-a-minute! moment for them

We need to remember things can go wrong

One manufacturer, Cutter Laboratories, failed to deactivate the polio virus sufficiently, causing 40,000 cases, 200 paralyzed children and 10 deaths. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1383764/

was that if you replicate virus in living organisms, you really can't guarantee you're only replicating what you originally intended to replicate

That's actually a good point you made. It will be a true sign of cult membership if those that are steadfastly opposed to vaccinations decide to have one if Trump recommends it.

Let alone a vaccine that's designed to kill the deadliest virus in an entire century.

11. You have to balance the risks

There might be people at high risk of covid-19 death who would be better off with vaccine before it is fully vetted. Just think of all of the volunteers who have already taken it, or will be over the coming months.

But I'm sure Trump would never present it that way.
He would say it's completely safe and effective even though it wouldn't be.

I need all the protection I can get from this virus due to my respiratory status. If it gives me Guillain-Barre, well, infection with the real deal could give it to me too if I survived.

And if I get the respiratory form, well, my already scarred lungs are going to be further damaged most likely. Again, if I survived.

So yeah, shoot me up. Even if it's experimental, should I qualify. I'm young, just have crappy lungs, so I might.

Edit to add: If they do figure out this vaccine, most likely the best population to give it to would be those with medical complications or the elderly -- not the entire population. No, it won't create herd immunity that way, but we don't try for herd immunity with pneumonia vaccines either. Even flu vaccine is usually prioritized to the people most in danger of death from getting the flu, in years when we have short supply. As we see the death profile for this virus is not people in their teens/20s, they wouldn't want to risk GB. But some of us might feel it's a risk worth taking.
