OR-SOS: Oregon's Democratic secretary of state primary race is up-in-the-air, with six days to go

Oregon’s most hotly contested and highest profile state race this primary season is the Democratic contest for secretary of state. And with no public polling, it’s anyone’s guess who will win Tuesday.

The new reality of campaigning during a pandemic, albeit in a state with a well-established vote-by-mail system, only adds to the uncertainty for the candidates: Sen. Shemia Fagan of Portland, Sen. Mark Hass of Beaverton and former 2nd Congressional District candidate Jamie McLeod-Skinner.

Four years ago, a similarly contentious Democratic secretary of state primary ended with then-Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian winning by just 5 percentage points, and then losing to a Republican in the general election despite Democrats’ statewide voter registration advantage.

Although this primary will surely go down in history as unique, there could be echoes of 2016.
