Conservative Columnist Imagines How WWII Would Have Gone If FDR Had Been 'Trumpy'

From HuffPo:

Conservative columnist Max Boot imagined World War II taking a very different turn in his latest column for The Washington Post published Friday.

Boot, a fierce critic of President Donald Trump, suggested in amusing yet ominous detail how the conflict would have played out had former President Franklin D. Roosevelt acted as Trump is currently doing amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Boot, who left the GOP in direct response to Trump’s 2016 election victory, envisioned the “Trumpy FDR” losing interest soon into the war, then prematurely declaring victory, hyping a “death ray,” complaining about rationing and curfews and ultimately holding rallies to rebuke his predecessor.

“If FDR had taken Trump’s approach, this column would be in German,” concluded Boot, who said it is “no surprise” that Trump has “already gotten bored with a war against the coronavirus that isn’t going his way.”

Boot's WaPo column:

The 75th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany got me thinking about how World War II might have turned out if President Franklin D. Roosevelt had acted like President Donald J. Trump.

Picture the scene a few months after Pearl Harbor. The first U.S. troops have arrived in England, and the Doolittle raiders have bombed Tokyo. But even though the war has just begun, the Trumpified FDR is already losing interest. One day he says the war is already won; the next day that we will just have to accept the occupation of France because that’s the way life is. He speculates that mobilization might be unnecessary if we can develop a “death ray” straight out of a Buck Rogers comic strip. He complains that rationing and curfews are very unpopular and will have to end soon. He tells the governors that if they want to keep on fighting, they will have to take charge of manufacturing ships, tanks and aircraft. Trumpy FDR prefers to hold mass rallies to berate his predecessor, Herbert Hoover. He even suggests that Hoover belongs in jail along with the leading Republican congressmen — “Martin, Barton and Fish.”

Coronavirus deaths are surging past 86,000 and unemployment claims past 36 million, but Trump sounded on Monday as if the pandemic is already over. “We have met the moment and we have prevailed,” he declared. It’s as if Roosevelt had declared Victory in Europe before D-Day.

If FDR had taken Trump’s approach, this column would be in German.

I watched this movie a few weeks back. My guess is that the orange anus would have this conspiracy theorist guy as Secretary of State, and Dana Andrews thrown in jail.

in the Pacific after the battle of Midway, and in Europe when the Germans were expelled from N. Africa in the Summer of 1942. He would have bragged about the low number of causalities, the booming economy, and demanded that we build an impregnable wall on the Atlantic and Pacific.

As Prescott Bush and many other GOP executives did, in fact.

and that we can't believe the atrocities reported in the fake news. He would tell Jewish people "all lives matter" and sacrifices must be made to help the economy.

All the while, making sure the Treasury Dept. and SEC didn't look into Nazi money laundering on Wall Street.

They didn't call Prescott Bush 'Hitler's banker' for nothing.

That have to be manufactured...I was thinking the exact same thing.

There should be test kits flooding the U.S. by now, under any competent administration. And masks and PPE and all of this simple stuff, they’d have available as easy as breathing.

And I thought about the logistics and planning of fighting world war 2, of the invasion of Normandy. Trump can’t even command the production of sufficient MASKS.
