Here's an easy way to vote in person and still maintain a safe distance.

A group of us at the VA (Both Left and Right) were chatting about the upcoming election and how it will be almost impossible to vote if COVID-19 is on the upswing, given the health concerns. It was a very animated, at times contentious, but ultimately civil and "mature" debate between both sides. As I was driving home, I drove by a bank and got an idea. What if each state enlists the help of banks and uses them as polling places?

1. You drive in with your ballot already filled out and pull up to the teller.
2. Drop your ballot into the pneumatic tube carrier, they secure it, and done.

Based on my last time at the bank, it takes about 1 - 2 minutes. That to me seems reasonable. Now, my fellow DUers, please pick it apart and help me find the vulnerabilities. But I can't think of a reason why this wouldn't be a valid compromise.

2. Good idea, except that the canisters used to

shuttle papers need to be disinfected between each use, or everyone handling them might transfer the virus.

When I deposit checks at the bank, I sanitize my hands with Purel each time I handle that canister. Until a UV light sanitizer is used as the canister transits through the tube, that's about the best you can do.

10. Thought about that. Give it a quick spray before sending it back out.

It's not 100% perfect, but it gets pretty close.

11. I don't trust the bank to properly sanitize it.

instead, for every visit to the bank, I sanitize my hands each time I handle the canister. However, many people would not do that, so voting with that method could easily introduce some very risky situations, i think.

There must be a better way.

3. Plus, make a copy of your ballot and email it to your democratic district office.

That should allow them to monitor accuracy at your particular bank drive-thru.

We would have to have a public service information campaign to make sure everyone knows to copy before voting.

We have GOT to be able to monitor the vote tallies.

IF THIS COULD BE A VOTING OPTION.....

Aren't their banks that do not use these, just ATMs? (OK, my last 20 years was banking in Manhattan, where you went inside, or used an ATM... They didn't have drive thrus, for obvious reasons.)

but myself, I would think that there would be a lot more chance of something happening with your ballot in the bank scenario than there would be dropping it off at the post office.

I live in Washington state, we vote by mail and it works. To my knowledge there has been no tampering with the ballots. Democrats and republican alike are happy with the vote by mail.

I just don't think banks would work out so well. Also Washington state does still have drop boxes at different locations, and in our primary this year, they showed lines of cars going trough the process of dropping their ballots off. So if states don't like mail, let them set up drop boxes at polling areas for those who don't want to mingle with other voters?

8. So, part of the problem with mail is chain of custody.

Yea, yea, I get it. We do it all the time, and I myself voter from overseas for 25+ years while in the Navy. But given that you have to know 45, and the Republican party in general, are going to claim fraud at every opportunity. This seems like a good compromise between a traditional polling place, and maintaining distance. I am assuming of course that there is a non-trivial uptick in COVID-19 cases as we head into November. Everything I've seen (I work at the VA) leads me to believe there will be.

5. My son and I typically do Early Voting and go on a day early in the schedule then early in the day.

We're usually the only voters there. Then afterwards we go to the buffet at the handy nearby
Mexquite Grocery (a well known ethnic-centric chain here) but they don't mind if we come in since we
look just like a lot of my Hispanic friends/family members. And they habla de englais too so it's a win-win.

This year we'll vote by mail. I don't want to put my son or myself at risk if we can help it. Dammit, I
really like that buffet!

12. Prefer just insert ballot @pull up, wait for it to inspect, show on screen your selections, then...

Final confirmation, ballot returned to you with it now marked clearly as used unto it, and a dated copy of what your recorded votes were, printed, and given to the voter on the spot.

No lame excuses, it's doable.

...it limits contact, maintains social distancing, doesn't break the chain of custody with regards to the ballot, and would pretty much eliminate any accusations of fraud by the Republicans.
