'It eats him alive inside': Trump's latest attack shows endless obsession with Obama

'It eats him alive inside': Trump's latest attack shows endless obsession with Obama
The president seems more interested in blaming his predecessor than tackling the coronavirus – so what’s driving Trump’s fixation?

snip//

Observers point to a mix of anti-intellectualism, racism, vengeance and primitive envy over everything from Obama’s Nobel peace prize to the scale of his inauguration crowd and social media following.

Ben Rhodes, a former Obama national security aide, tweeted this week: “Trump’s fact-free fixation on Obama dating back to birtherism is so absurd and stupid that it would be comic if it wasn’t so tragic.”

“Birtherism” was a conspiracy theory that Trump started pushing in 2011 (“He doesn’t have a birth certificate. He may have one but there is something on that birth certificate – maybe religion, maybe it says he’s a Muslim, I don’t know.”) . Nine years later, he has come full circle with “Obamagate”, which accuses his predecessor of working in league with the “deep state” to frame Trump for colluding with Russia to win the 2016 election.

There is zero evidence for this claim. Indeed, a case could be made that the supposed “deep state” did more to help Trump than hurt him when the FBI reopened an investigation into his opponent, Hillary Clinton, just before election day. When questioned by reporters, Trump himself has struggled to articulate what “Obamagate” means. Ned Price, a former CIA analyst, dubbed it “a hashtag in search of a scandal”.

But his allies in the Republican party and conservative media are stepping up to build a parallel universe where this is the big story and Obama is at the center of it. Sean Hannity, a host on Fox News, demanded: “What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?” Over the past week, the channel’s primetime shows have devoted more coverage to the bogus crimes of “Barack Hussein Obama” than to the coronavirus pandemic – and Trump’s mishandling of it.

Tara Setmayer, a former Republican communications director on Capitol Hill, said: “Donald Trump always need a foil. This riles up his base because they cling to anything that diverges responsibility for anything from Donald Trump over to someone else. And in this case Barack Obama is the boogeyman of the month.”

Beyond political expediency, there is a more profound antipathy at work. From the Iran nuclear deal to the Trans Pacific Partnership, from environmental regulations to the Affordable Care Act, Trump has always seemed to be on a mission to erase his predecessor’s legacy. With few deep convictions of his own, Obama became a negative reference point for Trump. Between 22 November 2010 and 14 May 2020, he tweeted about Obama 2,933 times, according to the Trump Twitter Archive.

This was most certainly a profoundly humiliating moment from which he has never recovered. And it only gets worse over time as the reality gap between Obama and his Presidential record widens.

I would think Obama would relish the opportunity to testify in front of the Senate and he will again humiliate Trump's disastrous handling of this country's stewardship while in Office.

And then, it will be Trump's turn in the well....

I remember reading somewhere that he originally wanted to run as a Democrat...but was rebuffed by the party. So he switched to Republican. I forget which book, but Steve Bannon and someone else met Trump prior to the 2008 election on the possibility of entering the race. Bannon told him not a chance, he had to reshape his image first, as it was well known he donated heavily to Democrats.

And that's what he did for eight years, cut of donations to Democrats and sends it instead to Republicans, jumps on the birtherism train, etc.

I put the asterisk * by the word “Read” because I have gotten them via “Audible” so I have listened to them, rather than read them. Kind of easier, as I spend most of my awake time behind the he wheel of a tractor trailer!

I’ve listened to Woodward’s book and several others and they all mention the fact that Trumpy just simply HATES Obama, with a deep, red hot passion.

He hates him because Barack Obama is everything Trumpy has failed to ever be, with the exception of becoming President.

The hilarious takedown of Trumpy at the White House Corespondents dinner made him seethe, according to people that know him, and he pretty much decided at that moment to run for the office, just to show everyone he was able to do it.

His pathology is legend.

And the fact that he is president now is a direct result of him being made fun of by a man who is ten times his better. He ran on the understanding that the pendulum swings in American politics, and there was a shitload of the American electorate who were seriously butthurt that the rational half of us elected Obama twice!

They hated that and gave us Trumpy to punish us! With the help of the Russians, of course.

Obama’s first address will be delivered to more than 27,000 graduates of the nation’s historically black colleges and universities as part of a two-hour event called “Show Me Your Walk H.B.C.U. Edition.” Hosted by comedian Kevin Hart and featuring a number of African American luminaries including Common, Steve Harvey, Vivica Fox and Chris Paul, the virtual graduation ceremony will be streaming live via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific.

Later today, Obama will be the marquee speaker during a virtual graduation ceremony for this year’s high school seniors called “Graduate Together: High School Class of 2020 Commencement,” which kicks off at 5 p.m. Pacific and will air as a prime-time special on the major broadcast networks and cable news channels as well as on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and other digital platforms. The one-hour event, organized by the LeBron James Family Foundation, XQ Institute and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, will feature an array of celebrities including Alicia Keys, the Jonas Brothers, Timothée Chalamet, Kumail Nanjiani and many others.

Sat May 16, 2020, 12:53 PM
May 2020

He never realized that he would care, either, until it was too late.

Every president leaves a legacy, something which he is remembered by.

Some are decidedly mixed, (LBJ would be a glaring example). Some are mostly positive (Clinton), some are mostly negative (Cheney dba Bush II). Some are larger than life (FDR). Some are downright disgraces (Harding). Some are those rare presidencies where the accomplishments were substantial without being flashy or spectacular in the Hollywood sense. Obama's was one such presidency. He saved the economy even as McTurtle tried to prevent it--not because McTurtle thought he had a better plan, but because he didn't want OBAMA to be the one who saved it (hey Mitchie? If you didn't want Obama to save the economy, you shouldn't have helped Cheney fuck it up to the point where it needed saving!!). Obama got the ACA passed. Obama got Bin Laden. Obama kept the USA on an even keel, both economy-wise and foreign-policy-wise. Despite the obvious setbacks, the world nevertheless looked up to Obama's USA as a power to be respected, and to Obama personally as a leader who had the gravitas, intelligence, and awareness of the world to lead such a nation. Born into a situation which traditionally dictated that such a man would NEVER have the chance to ascend to the presidency, he commanded respect from abroad not because he overcame those long odds, but also because he never made a big "lookit me!" deal over having done it. A simple "yes, we can" was enough of a message.

I think two things have been dawning on Trump in the last few months. One is the strong likelihood that he will be a one-term president. The other is that his legacy will be one of disorganization, incompetence, arrogance, institutionalized corruption, and--worst of all for him--there is NOTHING HE CAN DO TO CHANGE THAT. No money, no threats, no comments on Fox Noise by Hannity will ever change the fact that HISTORY, that one unforgiving perspective, will condemn him as an uncaring charlatan who was quite simply out of place. He was no more suited to be president than he was to be the high priest at a Buddhist monastery. That in itself doesn't bother him. That 6 out of 7 billion OTHER people know it, too--THAT will bother him until the end of his days.

Perhaps, late in the campaign, Obama will begin to attack the lies of the present administration and its leader. Trump lives in mortal fear that he will be historically bested by his black predecessor; it is the wages of racism.

I would love to see a good old fashioned frothing at the mouth, rug chewing breakdown by the Commander in Chief, and Obama has the power to bring it on. There is anecdotal evidence that Trump's hero did that, and I am certain that the Lincoln Project could get some mileage from the film footage:

‘During the Sudeten crisis the first signs of madness of the Führer were revealed. In those days, the mere mention of Beneš and the Czechs made him so livid he would lose his self-control completely. People have witnessed him throwing himself to the floor and chewing the carpet out of sheer anger. Those fits of madness gave him the nickname Teppichfresser (carpet-eater) among his enemies. I do not know whether he made a habit of chewing the carpets when he completely lost his temper, or whether the symptom disappeared after the Munich agreement.[*]

limbaugh feeds, backs up, and is well coordinated with the white house and it is truly aa huge mistake that democrats collectively and individually who want to get obama's back continue to give rw radio a free speech free ride

especially considering all the evidence suggesting putin has been using limbaugh and talk radio since at least 2008.
