The exchange was tense between the customer and Jesse, a Trader Joes employee sporting a white face mask and a flowery Hawaiian shirt.
Why arent you wearing the mask? Jesse asked the customer on a recent day at a store in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. I am not here to question what you believe in. These are the rules. I am just asking you kindly to wear the mask.
The customer, Genevieve Powers, who was recording the entire exchange, refused. We are in America here, she said, Land of the free. Then she turned her camera on other shoppers, who were less than amused: Look at all of these sheep that are here, all wearing this mask that is actually dangerous for them.
Jesse, identified only by his first name in the video, telephoned the police, who did not arrive. Finally, when Ms. Powers left the store, others customers burst into applause.

(22,154 posts)have a point to make, go find somewhere else to make that point, and not around others in an enclosed environment while you are at it, ranting and raving, and spitting all over everyone else.

(21,172 posts)All our Trader Joes in Northern California have signs no mask no admittance. They are limiting the number of people and outside they will give you hand sanitizer if you need it before entered the store. Personally I wear gloves now whenever into a store.
Stupid people are going to kill us.

(12,712 posts)Naive. That's a questionable remark and the answer is not about parading about, acting rude and arrogant as an blatant, public expression of being anti-social and naive at the same time.
Freedom is really reciprocal or there is only tyranny. Freedom, when investigated, starts with understanding that there are responsibilities in having it, promoting it and preserving it.
I take it that the employees and other shoppers were not considered in their right to not be needlessly harassed by an asshole with issues who doesn't at all understand the above? The right to be ignorant is the end of freedom as we knew it.

(115,790 posts)but the rule in this store is that you wear a mask. Put one on or shop somewhere else." Stores have rules about wearing shoes and shirts, too, and you don't see customers throwing hissy fits about that, even if some customers think they have the right not to wear shoes or shirts (which they do, generally speaking, but not if a store doesn't want them on the premises without those things). But masks have become symbols, and the issue isn't just public health any more. The MAGAts, put simply, think that refusing to wear a mask is a symbol of their loyalty to Trump and Trumpism. Their hero doesn't wear one because he thinks he looks weak, plus, it would acknowledge that the disease is serious and widespread. The members of the Trump cult have adopted that belief: The virus isn't that bad, so if you wear a mask it shows that you're weak and afraid. The libs are weak. Trump isn't weak; I want to be like him and I don't want to seen as weak and afraid like the mask-wearing libs (even though I definitely need an AR-15 to go to Wal-Mart for toilet paper).

(2,343 posts)Although the place I work doesn't mandate customers wear masks, I know that if they ever do, the workers will be responsible for enforcing it. It's absolute bullshit. Retail workers should not be the ones dealing with this shit. The public is full of dangerous, ignorant fucks.

Then she can leave, put a mask on or steal the groceries...
