Bomb threat in downtown Kansas City

All I know I got on talk news radio. Apparently a guy walked into the federal building downtown and announced he was a terrorist and is on the national terrorist list. He then said there was a bomb in his car in the parking lot.

There is conflicting info about what they have evacuated, but they said their news helicopter has to stay a half mile above the building. They've also had people call in who say they work in the building but have not been evacuated. Then they said the cops told them they would be evacuating a 3 mile area around the building.

Also bomb threats in Texas and North Dakota today.

5. From the Kansas City Star web site:
Fri Sep 14, 2012, 05:13 PM
Sep 2012

Sources told The Star the man created a disturbance inside the Fletcher Daniels building at 615 E. 13th Street by yelling something to the effect of: “Why am I on the terrorist watch list?”

A police bomb sniffing dog “hit” on the man’s car, but the man told police he had only fertilizer in the trunk.

Authorities tentatively identified him as Wahed Moharam, known to many Kansas Citians as “helmet man,” once a regular attendee at Chiefs’ games. The Chiefs revoked his tickets out of safety concerns in 2003 because he was in the federal witness protection program after testifying for the government in the first World Trade Center bombing.

The Star called a phone number linked with Moharam’s cleaning service, and a man who identified himself as Wahed answered around 2:15 p.m. He said he was talking with the FBI.

“Everything is OK,” Wahed said. “I don’t have to tell you exactly where I am. The FBI requests me to hang up the phone, but I can assure you I’m OK and they treat me good.”

He added: “And everything mistake. Everything mistake. I didn’t have any bad thing anyway. Everything is just — thank you and God bless you and I’m OK.”

His car was parked in front of the state office building. After the dog gave its handler a positive indication on the trunk, police considered the incident as a credible threat. Police also found a gun in the car.

Sources confirmed the man is on the watch list.

Police shut down streets in the area of 12th to 13th streets and Cherry to Charlotte streets. Police evacuated the state building and some floors of the federal building, which is across the street from the state office building. The Jackson County jail, which sits directly next to the state office building’s parking lot, was placed on lockdown, according to jailers.

Police used the robot to open the trunk so they wouldn’t have to put officers at risk.

I got a call at work today that my husband had been hurt at work, so I rushed out and as I was driving to meet him, this story was all over the radio. I posted this as I was waiting in the doctor's office.

His wrist may or may not be broken. He has to go back on Monday to see a specialist. Worker's comp doctor couldn't read the xray.

And he's bummed - no drums this weekend.

Sorry he got hurt and I hope he's taken care of.
Workers comp docs aren't supposed to find anything, are they?

It's a really odd story. I could see Peter Sellers playing the lead.

He testified for the prosecution against the blind Muslim cleric who inspired the firs rt WTC attack and was in the Federal Witness Protection Program. For some reason he found himslelf on the terrorist watch list and went down to ask them why. Somebody got nervous, and for some reason they took him into custody and sent the bomb sniffing dogs to his car. When the dogs got a "hit"-- shit hit the fan in downtown KC for about 4 hours. This story is weird.

Kansas City Missouri has a very diverse population. Unlike what some "cosmopolitan" 'coasters think, there are no cows in the street and there's electric lights and plumbing.
