Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon was a short-lived fad from the late 1990s which sprang from the notion that anyone in Hollywood was no more than six steps removed from sharing a credit with actor Kevin Bacon. The creators of the game, college buddies Craig Fass, Brian Turtle and Mike Ginelli, had their moment of fame, promoted the game and it thrived for a bit before fading into obscurity.
Until now.
Just as Bacon is set to reinvent himself as a TV star in Fox's upcoming thriller series "The Following," the game that bears his name has been reinvented by Google as a fun little Easter egg on its search pages.
The way you find it is simple. Type "bacon number" (no quotes) into Google's search bar, followed by the name of an actor or actress. The results will give you that performer's Bacon Number. (Bill Murray's Bacon Number, for instance, is 1 since he appeared with Bacon in "Wild Things." Angus Scrimm has a Bacon Number of 2 since the Tall Man appeared with Howard Hesseman in "Munchie Strikes Back," who appeared with Bacon in "Mister Roberts."

What amazes me is how nearly every "2" I get is due to X-Men: First Class.

...with silent stars Paulette Goddard and Fatty Arbuckle, but those were both just 3 degrees of separation. So I went for one I thought would surely be a actor that it would be impossible to stay within single digits, and boy was I surprised!

Most people have heard of the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” where it is proposed that any actor can be linked to the prolific entertainer in six steps or less. Readers of popular online link site Reddit decided to put this to the test, and were even able to connect Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth to Bacon!
- 1. Booth appeared in an 1863 production of MacBeth with Louisa Lane Drew.
2. Louisa Lane Drew appeared in an 1896 production of The Rivals with her grandson Lionel Barrymore.
3. Lionel Barrymore appeared in It’s A Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stuart in 1948.
4. Jimmy Stuart was in 1977?s Airport ’77 with Jack Lemmon.
5. Jack Lemmon was in JFK in 1991 with Kevin Bacon.
Another reader shaves Booths’ Bacon Number to 4 by tracing Lionel Barrymore to Kenneth Tobey in Right Cross (1950) then Tobey to Kevin Bacon in Hero At Large (1980.)
In an interesting aside, Kevin Bacon had been mentioned as producing a Showtime series on the Booth brothers in 2008, but the show seems to have dropped into limbo.
