He says he is so other people will take it, which he thinks will allow him to save face over his touting of a drug that was found to be useless for covid-19 and might actually be harmful (and make him and his cronies some money besides). He won't get sick from taking it because he's not taking it, but he'll claim he's taking it with no side effects - plus he's counting on not getting the virus (which he'll claim is because of the drug) because everybody in the WH is tested, and also has to wear a mask (except for him, of course).

It's not about profits, per se - the use of this sales technique is to convince people he was right about the drug. It's about Trump saying he takes it as a basis to brag about himself. The whole "I was right" and everyone else was wrong bullshit he enjoys claiming.

That's how Trump hopes to profit from the claim.

That Trump is claiming he is taking the drug. That doesn't mean that he is actually taking the drug.

Taking an ineffective drug with dangerous side effects simply makes him appear as ignorant and clueless as he's always been.

Given the dangerous side effects of the medication, especially in someone with his health profile, it would be extremely irresponsible, if not homicidal to prescribe such a drug to someone as unhealthy as Trump. I can't imagine that any doctor would give him an actual prescription.

The sick thing is that he is encouraging OTHER people to take the drug, telling them they have nothing to lose, which is simply not true. It can be very dangerous and even fatal for people with certain conditions.

However, he doesn't give a damn if more people die by following his advice. He's so desperate, he will try anything to revive his sagging poll numbers, and if there are a few hundreds or thousands more dead because of it, well, that's just a risk he was willing to take.
