Sweden becomes country with highest coronavirus death rate per capita

Sweden has now overtaken the UK, Italy and Belgium to have the highest coronavirus per capita death rate in the world, throwing its decision to avoid a strict lockdown into further doubt.

According to figures collated by the Our World in Data website, Sweden had 6.08 deaths per million inhabitants per day on a rolling seven-day average between May 13 and May 20.

This is the highest in the world, above the UK, Belgium and the US, which have 5.57, 4.28 and 4.11 respectively.

However, Sweden has only had the highest death rate over the past week, with Belgium, Spain, Italy, the UK and France, still ahead over the entire course of the pandemic.

3. This seems to fit their plan. Do nothing, let the death rate go high, ...

... in theory, it should follow the curve and sharply drop to a rate lower than other countries.

And at the end, by their theory, the total deaths per million should be close to other nations. And, they will not have suffered the economic losses that other nations are experiencing.

So, it's too early to know if their experiment is working.

We're going to have to increase our mortality by half, but lots of people are stepping forward to volunteer themselves.

I think the golden age when we believed we could defeat communicable diseases is over.

Pandemics and global warming catastrophes are likely to be leading causes of death in the 21st century, even in nations that consider themselves "advanced."

We can manage our own population and reduce our environmental footprint in rational ways, or we can wait around for Mother Nature to do it for us in her usual brutal ways.

Throughout the earth's long history many interesting species have come and gone, some of them in an instant. We'd do well to remember that.

13. Of course 'official' under-reported really -- so US really "winning"

If you look at deaths above seasonal average our total should be about 50% higher than reported -- which would make us about 6.16% and rising daily.

So, sorry Sweden -- you might think you are in the lead but to quote tRUMP -- "We are winning... We will be so tired of all the winning we are going to do."

14. I call bullshit on mutiple levels. Number one, the number of deaths is just wrong, number

two, our reporting of deaths varies and some days can have far more reported that actually died on that day, so it is possible to cherry-pick and utterly distort the data. I provide the REAL, actual deaths per day below, for the time period in discussion. Data matters, but even moreso, correct data matters.

Finally, I see once again the flat out lies in this thread that Sweden's strategy is 'herd immunity'. That was NEVER the case, this (that herd immunity was never our strategy) has been stated by multiple officials, including all the top people in the Government (ie the PM and his cabinet) many, many times, and it is simply a projection by news orgs, politicians, and regular people with agendas. It is gaslighting to keep on claiming this. Much of this disinfo came from a simple comment by Karin Ulrika Olofsdotter, the Swedish ambassador to the US who said that Stockholm may reach herd immunity in May. She was simply commenting on some stats, NOT saying that it was policy of any sort. NO ONE in the government or in the state health service ever said we were trying for herd immunity as our main or even lesser objective at all. It is complete bollocks, binary thinking ('oh, if they have looser restrictions they must be going for herd immunity!') and projection/political agendas.

an article on the ambassador and LOOK at the correction they had to make, this how disinfo gets spread

now, onto the numbers..............

We have 10.1 million people

Here are the daily deaths listed for each of all 8 days that Worldometers is claiming.

The source that Worldometers (in the link) SAYS they are getting their info from is our state health agency, you can find that at the link I gave above, but their numbers do NOT MATCH, at all with the source (which is our official state health service.)

Worldometer numbers

May 13 147
May 14 69
May 15 117
May 16 28
May 17 5
May 18 19
May 19 45

Total number of deaths for those 7 days is 430

divide by 7 (to get the rolling 7 day average you get 61.43

divide by 10.1 to get the deaths per day per million you get their number (6.08)

BUT they do NOT match the official statistics at all

they are vastly overstated

see for yourself (at the SAME link Worldometers gives)

https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/09f821667ce64bf7be6f9f87457ed9aa

the chart is interactive at the link

Avlidna per dag means deaths per day

here are the actual official actual daily numbers (again per Folkhälsomyndigheten, our state health agency, the same agency Worldometers claims to be getting their info from)

May 13 28
May 14 23
May 15 25
May 16 16
May 17 22
May 18 22
May 19 5

total official deaths over the 7 days 141

daily 20.15

per million 1.99, NOT 6.08

BTW, if you add up all the deaths on that chart above for every day back to the start, you do get the correct TOTAL number of COVID-19 deaths for the entire duration of pandemic through May 19th, so there is zero discrepancy on the total numbers of deaths, just the distribution day by day

again that is from the very same link that Worldometers claims to be using

that chart from our government has the ACTUAL deaths per day (when they factor in the exact day the patient actually died)

so Worldometers and this article are full of shit when it comes to the deaths per million over the 'week' they just claimed
