The times have changed, and the rate of infection was much slower, but its interesting to see how little coverage they gave the bleak milestone.

On January 25, 1991, this is how The New York Times reported that 100,000 Americans had died from AIDS. They didn't bother writing their own story. They ran an Associated Press story instead. On page 18. Below the fold. No pictures. No names.

People are already fatigued with COVID 19 deaths - and it's only been a few months.

Its not as if were arguing who offers the best or worst news coverage: NYT or Washington Post?
Whataboutism is propaganda or public relations between 2 or more competing factions (governments, airlines, hotels, sports teams, etc.) for the purposes of winning.
If we were to look at performance stats for a baseball player over three consecutive seasons, thats not whataboutism. But once we critique two players from different teams youre bound to hear, What about....
Please keep this in mind the next time youre tempted to trivialize 100,000 AIDS deaths.
