First, it has taken media attention away from his criminally incompetent handling of the pandemic. The cable news nets were 24/7 on the crisis, 100,000 deaths, Trump urging people to inject themselves with disinfectant, etc. now they are overwhelmingly about the protests and unrest. (God forbid the media walk and chew gum at the same time.)
Second, it gives him a chance to play the tough guy, law and order, I'll send in the military, looting/shooting, etc. which his base eats up. And it may attract back a few wavering suburbanites who were sickened by his pandemic response, but are scared seeing cities go up in flames on their TV screens.
He can't respond to a pandemic, but he is a genius at demonizing and playing to the worst fears of a big patch of America.

(102,304 posts)There is nothing his rabid racist base "loves" more than seeing police/Nat. Guard put down A. Americans "rioting"...
I don't know the answer, but I fear the good that NEEDS to come from this long pent-up response to increasing American racism-- as most recently displayed by George Floyd's murder and those of many others--may be perverted by his ilk.

(29,210 posts)Not sure Putin is as pleased with his oil war with the Saudis... but even that killed off the tar sands and oil shale of North America... not that I will cry about that.
Oh, now that they have that pipeline from North Dakota, at least for a while there won't be in oil to put in the damn thing.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/05/transcript-michael-flynn-trump-russia-ambassador-collusion-sanctions.html
Michael Flynn, the former Trump national security adviser, pleaded guilty in federal court to the charge of lying to FBI officials about a conversation he had with the Russian ambassador. Flynns defenders have insisted his lie was innocent and immaterial.
Late Friday afternoon, the Trump administration released the transcript of that conversation. The timing itself does not indicate much confidence that the transcript would support Flynns interpretation (late Friday afternoons not being the customary time to drop favorable news stories). And indeed, the transcript makes Flynns call look even less innocent.

(46,745 posts)but now that it's here he realizes what it means to the big picture. This is social unrest, on top of economic disaster. He's not going to make it to a second term. History will view his presidency as a disaster.
On top of that, all these white supremacist infiltrators are going to force the rest of the white community, to see the problems through the eyes of a minority.
