On the one hand . . .

There are, by estimate only because all things police are intentionally not reported, about 3,000,000 (3 million) police in the U.S. That's at all levels from county constables to FBI.

I believe that most of them take the job to serve and protect or at worst to collect a pay check. But there are those who are attracted to a job that gives them deadly weapons and authority over everybody they come in contact with. You, know, the bullies in middle school who took the little kid's lunch money. I don't think that number exceeds 10%, one in ten or 300,000 bad cops but who really knows because, cops. Of course that 10% can be clustered in 'hot spots' so perhaps every effin' one of a municipality's force is like that. But who knows because, well ya' know.

But yeah, 90% (my guess cause ya know, cops) are real public servants and want to be good people.

On the other hand (why does there always have to be another hand?), the reason that those 300,000 fascists gets to keep their jobs is because the other 2,700,000 protect them. Because, ya know, the brotherhood of the blue, the thin blue line, the whatever. Why is it that one cop shoots a kid who is stoned and walking away (on squad car camera) 19 times and 8 other cops fill out incident reports that all read 'the suspect lunged at the officer with a knife'.

The senior cop at the Tamir Rice shooting filled out an incident report that said they ordered the child to put the gun down three times yet the surveillance camera at the park showed the child being shot within 3 seconds of the car arriving. The car was still in motion when the door opened and shots were fired.

If the situation is to improve we have to eradicate the whole idea of brotherhood. If your partner trades a blowjob for a traffic ticket, he ain't your brother. If your partner is a racist bigot, he ain't your brother. If your partner plays fast and loose with authority, he ain't your brother. If your partner intentionally kills an unarmed and subdued suspect he ain't your fucking brother.

The same goes for our over glorified all volunteer 'professional' military.

Nor, when review boards and such are established, will they allow anyone else to police them. When suits against the cities and counties for wrongful actions succeed, none of the consequences are borne by either the offending officers or their supervisors and departments.

Whether it was sticking with the team or fear of retribution, it needs to stop.

Christ, if you’re going to get caught on camera — and nowadays one often will be the star of surveillance, body, or phone cameras — get caught doing something good.
