FB serves a very important purpose of people keeping in touch with friends and family. As an artist is is a great platform for networking with other artist. But it also is corrupt with a owner who does not have his users best interest as a priority.
So a platform that is funded by it's users, like Wikipedia, without ads or a greedy owner would fulfill the promise of what FB could be.
And no, I don't know how to make this happen.

(4,845 posts)It was good when it's about posting your own updates and pictures so you keep in touch with friends and family. The problem started when they start pushing "news" and create political groups without any kind of restrictions.
Like you, I don't know how to solve that problem or to create a new platform. You have to get the whole world to start using that new platform. It has to do all that fb do (including the bad stuffs like news) to get everyone to switch. I just don't see that happening.

(2,328 posts)In 2003, Zuckerberg, a second-year student at Harvard, wrote the software for a website called Facemash. He put his computer science skills to questionable use by hacking into Harvard's security network, where he copied the student ID images used by the dormitories and used them to populate his new website. Website visitors could use Zuckerberg's site to compare two student photos side-by-side and determine who was "hot" and who was "not."
Facemash opened on October 28, 2003and closed a few days later, after it was shut down by Harvard execs. In the aftermath, Zuckerberg faced serious charges of breach of security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy. Though he faced expulsion from Harvard for his actions, all charges against him were eventually dropped.

(22,366 posts)There were things called news groups using NNTP and mailing lists that kept like minded people together
Then we had personal Web sites from the likes of Geocities
These were grassroots, bottoms-up efforts that thrived in the early Internet

(18,402 posts)You can keep different groups together, and definitely communicate with friends and family. No, it's not that pretty, but it works.

(25,357 posts)Just logged in again. Full of right wing stuff. QAnon is one of the most active groups on there. Bernie has 532 members.
The list goes on and on with Conservative and Brexit groups.

(22,920 posts)white supremacists to invade. Once theyre in its too hard to remove them. The laser focus on free speech allowed this to happen on all platforms. They say they remove them but its like whack-a-mole.

(22,920 posts)You may recall my other platform, Wishadoo, which Glenn Beck trashed while on Fox.
Im working on a FB alternative which- unlike all other platforms will be anti-racist and will not allow white supremacists and Nazis refuge in the name of free speech. Until a strong foundation of people with aligned values is built, it will be invitation only.
Trying to figure out how to raise $2000 quickly because time is of the essence given events of the last few days.
It isnt intended to compete with FB regarding staying in touch with people (who may not share the same values) but instead an alternative for those of us who dont want to share space with Nazis.

(22,920 posts)I actually don't want to draw a lot of attention to it because it will attract the Nazis and Russians (both of whom have attacked my other sites). I'd rather get the basics going some other way and get that core group of people to create a foundation before expanding in any way, including re: funding, so it can withstand the attacks. So raising money via typical crowdfunding right now is something I'm debating.
