You know cars had passed through the crowd before what you have seen and there were cars on the road behind him. Those cars were on the road because they advanced the closure after the protestors got on the freeway. They were already on it.
He managed to get the truck stopped very quickly, without jackknifing and since he was basically carrying a giant bomb that was a hard thing to do.

(7,300 posts)Post 2 covers why. I'll add the driver credited the protesters for coming to his aid and not to attack him. This is a good ending.

(512 posts)He should have stayed put and let the peaceful protestors dragged his ass out of that truck to beat the bloody shit out of him!! How dare he protect himself to see another day with his family!!! Fucking white privilege.

(4,426 posts)It combines a big curve and an upwards slope to get to the 35W bridge. The protesters were just past the Washington Ave northbound ramps and were on the bridge.
So, this guy got his first glimpse of the crowd as he came out of the curve. He had some speed up and was on the gas because he was driving a semi and needed to get through the curve and up the hill.
The protesters saw him and he saw them at about the same time. His horn is sounding continuously as he hits the trailer brakes and steers into the middle lane to avoid hitting the crowd piling up against the divider. They had nowhere to go. If he hadnt moved right he would have mowed them down. He got it stopped about 8 seconds after he saw them. Thats pretty good.
If you look closely, you can see him thread the needle between the crowd on his left and discarded backpacks on his right that he probably wasnt sure were people or not. He really did not want to hit anything.
Bad that he was there and not aware of what was happening, but that was some pretty good driving for a 50,000 pound truck.
