FLIPPABLE: Justin Stofferahn for MN-SD38

My name is Justin Stofferahn; I am a father, husband, and public servant. I live in White Bear Township with my wife Marissa and our two young children, Freddy and Verity. I am running to be the next State Senator from District 38 because I believe state government can help create opportunity for every family.

I believe this in part, because I have lived it. Growing up, my family was constantly on the precipice of falling out of the middle class. My mother lived paycheck to paycheck working at a call center. Her company gave her benefits, but it also constantly threatened to ship her job overseas. My dad poured every penny he had into getting a business off the ground. He has survived nearly two decades of ups and downs, even a financial crisis, while constantly being squeezed by the rising cost of healthcare.

My parents fought to give me the opportunities I needed to succeed. With a little bit of savings from them, a Pell grant and some state assistance, and plenty of student loans, I graduated from college with a degree in political science and a drive to shape public policy. This drive took me to the Humphrey School of Public Affairs where I graduated with a master’s degree in public policy.

Along the way I met Marissa. Her incredible capacity for compassion has made me a better person and will make me a better legislator. In addition to be an incredible mother to our children, she is also a dedicated public servant. A social worker, Marissa works in child safety for the State of Minnesota, helping protect our state’s most vulnerable children. She is my hero, and a role model for our children.

I currently work for the Blue-Green Alliance, helping the organization at a federal level establish new policies to reduce the carbon footprint of our infrastructure while creating more American jobs.

Prior to this work, I had the great fortune to spend most of my career at the Capitol working to level the playing field for Minnesotans. At the Minnesota Department of Revenue, I worked to close corporate loopholes and create a simpler, fairer tax code. Working on behalf of communities across Greater Minnesota, I helped secure investments in infrastructure, transportation and public safety. As a member of the White Bear Township Economic Development Advisory Board as well as the Minnesota Main Street Alliance, I have advocated for our small businesses.

These experiences will make me an effective advocate in the Senate for the people of our district. As we look to the future we must continue to invest in our local schools, fix a broken healthcare system, protect our environment, and create economic opportunity for our workers, small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Unfortunately, a broken political system has prevented the Minnesota Senate from taking action on these critical issues. Politicians are so busy protecting the special interests that fund their campaigns, they have lost sight of who they represent.

We deserve better.

Marissa and I chose White Bear Lake as the place to raise our family because this community fights for each other. As your Senator, I will fight for strong families, vibrant small businesses, and world-class schools for all the communities in Senate District 38.
