This could be our future.

There are already locations in the cities where structures similar to those in the pictures exist, as people can no longer do more than patch their properties and more and larger groups of people are crowded into apartments or elderly modified motels built for three or four occupants instead of five or six, and abandoned buildings are being used as squats for the working poor who can't afford rent. A super-hurricane or severe stormfront/flooding event, and that could be a low-lying area in a major city like Chicago, Detriot, Boston, Sacramento...

Most of the people in these pictures have (or have retired from) jobs where they work hard for subsistance pay.
