Trump shares Candace Owens interview saying 'George Floyd was not a good person'

US president Donald Trump has shared an interview in which conservative activist Candace Owens describes George Floyd as a symbol of a “broken culture in black America today” and insists that “he was not a good person”.

Mr Floyd died last month in Minneapolis after a police officer pinned him to the ground with a knee to the neck for nearly nine minutes. The killing has sparked days of protests across the US against racism and police brutality, and also demonstrations around the world.

But as the Black Lives Matters movement runs into its 12th consecutive day, with demonstrators calling for police reform and an end to systemic racism, Ms Owens said she had been left ‘sickened’ by the “fact that he [Mr Floyd] has been held up as a martyr”.

In an interview with radio host Glenn Beck, who posted it to Twitter before it was retweeted by President Trump, Ms Owen said: “George Floyd was not a good person. I don’t care who wants to spin that, I don’t care how CNN wants to make you think that he had just turned his life around.”

The issue Candace isn't whether he was good or bad but rather he did not do anything to warrant a death sentence. Hope that helps.

He had a bad record of abuse and unnecessary force.

It makes me sick that people like Candace think he was justified.

I don’t care how they spin it, Chauvin was never going to turn his life around.

They always mention things like, "Mr Floyd died last month in Minneapolis after a police officer pinned him to the ground with a knee to the neck for nearly nine minutes"... But they fail to add that this happened because of a counterfeit $20 bill that he may not even have known was fake.

So it doesn't matter a lick of spit if he was a "good person" or a "bad person." He didn't deserve to die.

They love it when she says outrageous things. She's figured that out. She is nothing more than a grifter willing to say and do anything for money and recognition.

my Mom played that interview for me. Candace went over Floyd's record and basically said that he was scum and people shouldn't be making a martyr of him. She said that she hoped Chauvin would get what's coming to him, that he had no right to do what he did even if Floyd had a record.

But before she could finish her talk, though, Candace couldn't help but disparage Democrats and mention how black people were hurting themselves by looking to the Democrats for help. That is what the interview was about, not Floyd, not Chauvin, and not police brutality.

Controversies
Dispute with Mollie Tibbetts' family
In August 2018, Owens had a dispute with a cousin of Mollie Tibbetts. Tibbetts was murdered, allegedly by Cristhian Bahena Rivera, a 24 year old Mexican undocumented immigrant.[72] Tibbetts' cousin said that Owens had exploited Tibbetts' death for "political propaganda".[73][74] Owens responded, describing the cousin's criticism as a "strange" attack on Trump supporters.[75] Later that month the University of Iowa chapter of Turning Point USA criticized Owens for "public harassment" towards a member of Tibbetts' family.[75]

October 2018 mail bombing attempts
In October 2018, during the mail bombing attempts targeting prominent Democrats, Owens promoted the conspiracy theory that the bomb mailings were sent by leftists.[76] After authorities on October 26 arrested a 56-year-old suspect who was a registered Republican and Trump supporter, Owens deleted her comments on Twitter without explanation.[77]

Comments about Hitler
At the launch of the British offshoot Turning Point UK in December 2018, in response to an audience member who asked for a "long-term prognosis" about the terms "globalism" and "nationalism", Owens said:

I actually don't have any problems at all with the word "nationalism". I think that the definition gets poisoned by elitists that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I don't want. Whenever we say "nationalism" the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler. You know, [Hitler] was a national socialist, but if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, okay, fine. The problem is that he wanted—he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German. Everybody to look a different way. That's not, to me, that's not nationalism.[78]

Following heavy criticism for her comments, Owens clarified them on Twitter and in a Judiciary Committee hearing in the US House of Representatives in February 2019.[79] Owens said that "[Hitler] was a homicidal, psychopathic, maniac that killed his own people" and "[Hitler was not a Nationalist, he] murdered his own people, a nationalist would not kill their own people". That the point of her comments was to say that there is "no excuse or defense ever for... everything that [Hitler] did".[80] She also said that her comments were about Hitler's crimes against Jews.[79]

Owens' comments about Hitler were played in April 2019 by Representative Ted Lieu during testimony in front of the House Judiciary Committee about the issue of increasing hate crimes and white supremacy in America. Lieu said that he did not know Owens and was just going to let her own words characterize her, before playing the audio clip. Owens responded that Lieu had deliberately omitted an interviewer's question that provided critical context to her words, with the intent of misrepresenting them as an endorsement of Hitler, to smear her reputation.[81]

Donald Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. praised Owens on Twitter for "call(ing) out the Dems on their purposeful manipulation of facts for their narrative".[82]

Mention in Christchurch shooter's 'manifesto'
The terrorist who committed the Christchurch mosque shootings produced a 'manifesto' in which he wrote that Owens had "influenced him above all".[83][84][85] According to journalist Robert Evans, it was "possible, even likely" that the shooter was a fan of Owens, considering her rhetoric against Muslim immigrants, but in context the terrorist's references to her may have been an example of "shitposting" intended to provoke political conflict.[86][87]

Hours after the shootings, Owens posted a tweet in reaction to allegations that she inspired the mass murder, saying that she never created any content espousing her views on the 2nd Amendment (to the United States Constitution) or Islam.[88] Her tweet was criticized[by whom?] for appearing glib, and it was reported that she actually had posted tweets about the 2nd Amendment and Islam.[89][90][91][70] She later made formal statements rejecting any connection to the shooter.[70]

George Floyd protests
In June 2020, she falsely claimed that George Soros paid people to protest the killing of George Floyd.[92] Shortly afterwards, she argued that George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer who knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes, "was not a good person. I don't care who wants to spin that."[93] She said, "The fact that he has been held up as a martyr sickens me."[93] President Trump retweeted Owens's remarks about Floyd.[93][94]
