LANSING Former Vice President Joe Biden has increased his lead over President Donald Trump to 12 percentage points in Michigan, where voters are unhappy with Trump's response to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll.
Biden, the presumed Democratic nominee, leads Republican Trump in Michigan 53-41, according to a poll conducted by EPIC-MRA of Lansing between May 30 and last Wednesday.
Biden's lead over Trump in Michigan, seen as a key battleground state in the Nov. 3 presidential election, has doubled from six points in January, when Michigan voters favored Biden over Trump 50-44, in an earlier EPIC-MRA survey.
Trump's response to the coronavirus pandemic is not helping him in Michigan, according to the poll of 600 likely voters, which was conducted by live callers and included 40% cellphone participation. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Asked about Trump's handling of the pandemic, 58% gave him a negative rating, 41% gave him a positive rating, and 1% were undecided, or refused to say.
In other poll findings:
63% say the country is heading in the wrong direction, up from 50% in January.
If the election was held today, 51% would vote to replace Trump, up from 44% in January.
Independent voters, who often decide Michigan elections, are backing Biden over Trump, 63-23.
U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, a Democrat from Bloomfield Township, leads Republican challenger John James of Farmington Hills, 51-36, with 13% undecided or refusing to say.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer got a job performance rating of 55% positive and 43% negative, up from 43-50 in January. And 60% gave her good marks for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

(5,315 posts)but not for ud. We need to pound it hard for the next 149 days. Trump hasn't even begun to roll out his misinformation machine backed by unlimited money.
Take nothing for granted.

(23,350 posts)Or maybe I missed the sentence you saw.
Anyway, the story also mentioned that H. Clinton had a 10-point lead in some polls, but lost the state. We have to get out the vote.

(66,388 posts)The GOP is going to be exerting frantic efforts to steal this election. Changing or losing votes, or disputing them until someone gives up, requires a lot of hard work.
It's a lot easier to just keep those votes at home and away from the polls.
Promoting 'foregone conclusion' stories may not work as well this year as it did in 2016, but since it worked last time, there's no reason for them not to try again.
Get out and vote.
I don't care if polls say Trump's only remaining voting base is six guys in a tarpaper shack in East Nowheresville. Get out and vote.

(3,491 posts)We saw what happened in '16 when Robby Mook thought those states were in the bag. They are must wins and must be treated as such with maximum effort through 11-3.

(2,315 posts)Yes, spend resources in winnable states, but the cost of people-powered ground pounding is low and forces them to defend everywhere. Today's huge equality movement needs to become tomorrow's GOTV.

(58,670 posts)We need an overwhelming win. I'm talking an over-fucking-whelming curb stomping of epic, historical proportions.
That would make me happy come November.

If the polling is still that wide when we're close to November, then it might be wise to devote more money to ads in Ohio or other purple states.
