(2,343 posts)And am watching the race. There has been lots of discussion of our current tribulations and lots of clips of individual drivers discussing their thoughts. Im sure the NASCAR big wigs have ordered the focus.
Im also monitoring on Twitter, and of course, there are a lot of Im done with NASCAR tweets.
Its a great sport but could sure use some progressiveness!

(31,112 posts)type thing where both President Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama (Obama was sitting prez at the time) were on stage together and taking a bow from thunderous applause, camera person does a swing thru the crowd, close up, and there was a VERY BIG SMILING Jeff Gordon with his phone out recording the event and applauding the two great presidents.
When he first came to racing he was married to or shortly therein married a rightwing religious woman who made sure he thanked god each time he won, you could tell he was being forced to do it. He divorced her and married a woman from Europe and from that point forward he had his eyes opened and he became a liberal the way most do when they get around the world and see people, places and things.
She is or was a Belgian model, his wife Ingrid

I went to Bristol before the expansion...concrete bench seating, HORRIBLE...they went from 20,000 seats to over 100,000 and now they cant fill half of it.

(42,770 posts)Maybe Talledega? But totally get it, don't know why people stopped going. You can always get a cheap seat just to be there. Maybe because TV broadcasts show so much more - it's better?
Where else have you been? We flew to Richmond which was fun
It's on a Saturday night so you can be in and out without being off work. Richmond is a cool old town.
Talledega is an experience like no other. It's redneck-a-mania. Laugh riot.

(51,122 posts)Crowd sizes have dwindled dramatically in the past few years. Years ago you would have had to kill someone to get a ticket to Bristol. Now? Huge swaths of grandstands empty. They could probably let fans back and still socially distance!
Totally OT: We had a dog named Bristol cuz he was short and round

(42,770 posts)NASCAR fans. Been so proud of NASCAR - mandating the wearing masks, banning fans at track, limiting physical interaction. They actually fired a driver over a racial slur on hot mic. Not the redneck organization most people think it is.

(42,770 posts)today's race and heard the head of NASCAR give an announcement to all drivers.... It was amazing. About social justice and everyone working harder to make things better. My heart is with them. Haven't heard a better, from the heart, inspiring thing from anyone.

(512 posts)That is not my full time job, but I have been to several other racetracks. I honestly think that Dale Jr. is pretty liberal. Years ago he took his entire crew to see Michael Moores movie Farenheit 911. He spoke out years ago on his feelings (negative) on people flying the Confederate flag. I have heard him speak out several times against bigotry. The biggest names in the sport seem to be more progressive. Among them are Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Blaney, and Brad Kesolwoski.
Years ago drivers and their crews almost always were from the South. That has changed dramatically and the sport has been more diversified.
Nascar's truck series is sponsored by Camping World. A few years ago, the Championship Banquet was going to be at a Trump property in Las Vegas. The owner of Camping World called Nascar and said hell no. Move it or lose sponsorship. They moved it. 😁
