it is a more appropriate and understandable frame to most people. The term "mentally ill" has some bite to it.

as his lack of empathy seems more intentional to me, over which he has control. However, I think we should be allowed to see his full record of medical treatment in light of his extremely bizarre behavior and his life's history of bizarre behavior. An armchair diagnosis as to whether he's truly mentally ill or just selfish, narcissistic, and weird is not going to cut it. There's no way we can really know one way or the other without further medical proof. And then there's the possibility he could be both mentally unstable and sociopathic.

(20,679 posts)It's a milder form of ambulatory autism (my made-up term. I teach autistic kids).
He's alot like the kids who have memorized a list of responses, and chooses the most likely response. Works some of the time.
