COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS-TV) —
During a meeting of the board of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on Thursday, officials announced 687 new COVID-19 cases in South Carolina.

That sets a new record for the number of cases reported in one day...

Over the past three weeks, 40% of the state’s total number of cases have been diagnosed.

The recent spike in cases is not just due to more testing, DHEC said.

While case numbers have increased, so has the percent positive. Percent positive refers to the number of people who test positive for COVID-19 in relation to the number of tests being performed.

The total number of individuals tested Wednesday statewide was 4,791 and the percent positive was 14.3%, DHEC said. When the percent positive is low, it may indicate that more widespread testing is being performed and the percent positive may more accurately reflect how much disease is present in the community.
