Arlington, Lee, Jefferson Davis - a whole slew of counties in America named after those traitorous bastards

(5,542 posts)I grew up in Jacksonville and we have a bunch of them. There was even one named for Nathaniel Forrest who was the first Grand Wizard of the KKK in addition to being a Confederate General. They finally had the sense to change that school name in 2013 but there are still a number of others.
The schools often take the naming rights to the next level. They often use the entire name of the individual rather than just the last name which makes it much more of a direct homage. And then, often have mascots that lean into the glorification. Robert E Lee High School in Jacksonville are the Generals. And there are plenty of schools still calling themselves the Rebels
I cannot even imagine the feeling of African American children spending their formative years in an institution named after a famous oppressor. And that doesn't even address the effect of glorifying those historical names to the white kids.
