If, one of the reasons was/is unemployment, what if we hadn't shipped so many manufacturing jobs away, would the military still need to be so large? I also think they like the size of their power structure and the money involved which at times is spent lavishly.. At one point my brother was assigned to Rumsfield when he was going to audit the military. The reason we never heard the result is because, as my brother said, it was an impossible task and couldn't be done.
