because they aren't beholden to the president who appointed them they can decide cases based on the law, or at least the way they interpret the law. This means that some cases won't come out the way that president wanted and there's not a damn thing he can do about it.

they actually know and understand the law. That's a huge assumption for many of the appointees.

and in some courts write a draft opinion. This is particularly true in the lower federal courts and in the state appellate courts. These are recent law grads, usually from the top of their law school classes, who actually do know the law and are pretty immersed in it. Sometimes a law clerk can change a judge's mind. It sucks that some judges are picked because they seem to be ideologues and not because they have solid experience or a history of scholarship, but their clerks can keep them from making obvious legal blunders even if the underlying ideology is followed.

US SC in some cases have followed the Constitution and laws but overall they, the five, are RWers.
