The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, was dressed in battle fatigues when he accompanied Trump on his waltz through the tear gassed stench of Lafayette Park on June 1st en route to the "Presidents' Church."
The general has since apologized for participating in what was clearly a political event. I'll take him at his word since he had the guts to stand up and admit he was wrong. Well done, sir, especially considering your boss's constant demand for fealty.
However, why was he in battle fatigues? I recall an episode of The West Wing when a Coast Guard officer came to the White House to report to Sam Seaborn about an oil tanker that had run aground. She told Sam that officers are required to wear dress uniforms when they go to the White House or before Congress. (If this isn't true, then shame on Aaron Sorkin or whomever!)
The warrior outfit was a conscious choice. Can anyone set me straight on this?
Thanks, in advance.

(1,370 posts)The whole thing was sprung on him, if I understand correctly. I think his apology was pretty sincere, personally.

(22,050 posts)In fact, does it really matter? Trumps attempt to look strong backfired spectacularly, which is all good.
Gen. Milley gets the benefit of the doubt, in my opinion.
Get your work done! By the way, who was conducting Rhapsody in Blue? It was a nice performance.

(22,050 posts)She's an awesome talent and a lovely woman. I've met her three or four times when she conducted my friend's compositions.
Have you ever heard Michael Tilson Thomas's recording of Rhapsody In Blue? He took the piano rolls that George Gershwin recorded and removed the "overdubs" of the accompaniment leaving the solo piano part. (A tedious process that required filling in thousands of perforations in the piano rolls.) Then he conducted the LA Philharmonic accompanying the piano roll performance on a modern instrument. It's special, effective and fun!

(6,265 posts)is that the camo uniform is his daily wear for work and that he just didn't take the time to change into something else. But we don't know how he was summoned or what he was told, or how much time he was given, or when the meeting was scheduled. Given how T does things, it may have been a "get your butt over here right now" call. And Milley probably didn't know about the walk to the church.
As far as Sorkin and TV shows and movies, don't be too hard on them. Fiction is fiction.

(22,050 posts)It seems you're on the right track. General Milley probably didn't plan on going to the White House that day.
Aaron Sorkin is one of my favorite writers and my comment was really tongue-in-cheek. Unlike Trump, we know the difference between fact and fiction.

(7,733 posts)when a military superior visits subordinates, especially in a situation like General Milley was in, that superior or Commander will normally wear the same uniform as those he/she is looking over. Its a sign of respect to subordinate troops. The camouflage uniform is simply a work uniform. It would have been inappropriate to traipse around in an office uniform while the troops were in Cammies.
