"This is fake news," Krzysztof Szczerski, a top aide to the Polish president, told public radio on Friday.

The U.S. ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, reacting on Twitter to the report, said negotiations remained on track ...

STUTTGART, Germany — An agreement on a U.S. troop increase in Poland will be announced shortly and could be larger than originally planned, the top U.S. diplomat in the country said.

The development comes as the U.S. is reportedly considering reducing its troop presence in Germany.

An announcement on the plan is “coming soon,” U.S. Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher said on Twitter.

President Donald Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda’s “vision for increased U.S. presence in Poland will be even greater than originally outlined,” Mosbacher said in a post Thursday ...

... In early June, as Washington announced it would cut its troops’ presence in Germany by 25 percent, Poland's foreign policy circles were abuzz debating whether the Trump administration would move them to Warsaw, according to Reuters.

The US envoy to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, an aide and a friend to Trump, had already dropped hints about giving Poland a bigger role in securing America's geopolitical interests. On 15 May, Mosbacher suggested that Germany should “reduce its nuclear potential and weaken NATO” and “perhaps Poland, which pays its fair share, understands the risks and is on NATO’s Eastern Flank, could house the capabilities”.

Four days prior to that, Mosbacher praised the US-Poland security arrangement in light of the joint air exercise between the two countries ...

4. Polish presidential aide refutes Reuter's report on Fort Trump failure

Polish presidential aide Krzysztof Szczerski on Friday called a report by Reuter's new agency on the alleged failure of the Fort Trump concept "total disinformation." Fort Trump is Poland's plan to set up a permanent US military base in Poland.

Reuters wrote on Wednesday that "Poland's grand proposal in 2018 to name a military base in honor of Donald Trump, in return for the U.S. president placing a permanent presence there, has crumbled amid disputes over how to fund the deployment and where to garrison the soldiers." There is also the problem of the legal status of US troops, according to the agency.

"First of all: this information is complete disinformation, and not information," Szczerski told Polish public Radio One on Friday.

Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak also denied the report on Twitter. "We are now arranging the final details," he wrote ...

... A U.S. official familiar with the matter said the idea had been doomed from the start: “There is no Fort Trump.”

On June 12 last year, Trump agreed, with Polish President Andrzej Duda beside him at the White House, to send 1,000 more troops to his NATO ally, bolstering its defenses against Russia to the east and cementing bilateral ties ...

A year on, government officials in Washington and Warsaw say they still cannot agree where the troops should be stationed, and how much of the multi-billion-dollar deployment Warsaw should fund ...

WARSAW, Poland — By 2026, the Polish Ministry of Defence plans to allocate about 185 billion zloty (U.S. $47 billion) toward acquiring new weapons and military equipment, with fifth-generation fighter jets a top priority ...

Negotiations for the jets are taking place as Warsaw is seeking a permanent U.S. military presence in Poland, dubbed “Fort Trump.” Warsaw offered to allocate at least $2 billion toward the project under which the U.S. would build a military base in the country. On June 12, Polish President Andrzej Duda met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss the initiative and ink a joint declaration on defense cooperation regarding U.S. force posture in Poland.

“The United States plans to enhance its current military presence of approximately 4,500 rotational U.S. military personnel in Poland. This enduring presence is expected to grow by about 1,000 additional U.S. military personnel in the near-term, and would focus on providing additional defense and deterrence capabilities in Poland,” the declaration read. “With the understanding that the increased U.S. force presence in Poland is made sustainable with Polish support, Poland plans to provide and sustain jointly determined infrastructure for the initial package of additional projects listed below, at no cost to the United States and taking into account the planned level of its use by U.S. forces” ...

The Trump Administration has drawn criticism for considering U.S. troop withdrawals from Afghanistan and Syria, but it’s considering at least one new permanent military base overseas. It even has a suggested name: “Fort Trump.”

Under Secretary of Defense for Policy John Rood is in Warsaw, Poland this week to discuss the proposed base, which would boost the Pentagon’s presence along Russia’s western border. The negotiations take place as Washington’s and Moscow’s militaries already face off in close proximity at several flashpoints in places like Syria and across eastern Europe ...
