(82,849 posts)And Arthur Ashe, even in death, will continue to have more class in his little finger than the moral lilliputians who did this.

(102,413 posts)I watched all of his contemporaries, both male and female. But, Ashe was special in so many ways beyond his game. This is very upsetting and not only because it was obviously white supremacists... Ashe ought to be respected by ALL OF US.

(51,308 posts)I have several of the old greats' autographs on that cover.
The club my parents belonged to at that time hosted a Men's Championship tournament there in the 70s. I think Ashe won one of the first of them. At the time, Ken Rosewall was my favorite, but I loved Ashe too.
Grew out of wanting autographs lol, but glad I kept that cover.

(53,410 posts)Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. was an American professional tennis player who won three Grand Slam singles titles. Ashe was the first black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team and the only black man ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980. Wikipedia

(7,715 posts)Arthur Ashe was a wonderful human being. It boggles my mind that anyone would do something to this real gentleman.

(5,346 posts)And how he shocked the sports world by beating a very formidable Jimmy Connors at Wimbledon.
Jimmy Connors was an asshole. Ashe was class. That's why I was pulling for Ashe. And he delivered!
I spend lots of time in Richmond... and I smile every time I walk or drive past his memorial on Monument Avenue. But not now. This saddens me.

(2,771 posts)We have more important things to worry about. You know, like police randomly destroying our lives or outright killing us. I fully expected that sort of thing from the racist cohort at some point. I know the reaction they wanted was some abject hand wringing but I can offer little more than a (shrug) and a head shake at how weak, sad and pathetic their gesture is.
