Would a faction of the GOP organise a coup and unveil an 'August Surprise'?
My understanding of the nomination process may be flawed, but he's not the nominee until moved and voted at the convention?

(10,914 posts)The GOP is all in for DFT.
The few rare exceptions are funding things like the Lincoln Project. There's not enough to force a coup, and if there was, who could they nominate that would have a better chance?

(27,818 posts)... what's left of Trump's 'base' would immediately turn on the Republican party for pushing their "best pResident evah!" off the ticket.
Once again, the GOP finds itself between a rock and a hard place - ironically located in the corner they've painted themselves into.

(525 posts)Donald Trump became the Republican presidential nominee on March 17 after securing a majority of pledged delegates. He currently has 2.043 delegates and he only needed 1,276.

I don't think that could happen, but we have seen stranger things.

(24,437 posts)They've come this far. They're all in now and I think that they know it. And they probably know that replacing him at this late juncture would be a big mess for them as well. Maybe some of the *smarter* Republicans might want to dump him but there is no mechanism for that to happen. He has no primary challengers(?) and the Republicans in many states canceled their primaries to help ensure Trump challengers couldn't gain much traction.

(66,462 posts)But the GOP is thrilled to have the guy who will hammer every issue on their platform like no other Republican has done in forty years.
Trump is the poster child for their squalid, vile, slimy, filthy, inhumane, anti-American political platform.
They'll never, ever give that up.
If Trump loses in November, the RNC will just get a pick-ax, a front-loader, and an oil drill, and go prospecting for someone even lower and more reprehensible than Trump; and there was a time when I wasn't sure that was possible. But the "Fuck Your Feelings. Trump 2020!" crowd turned me around on that one...

(11,495 posts)dirt on many of the GOP members of the House and the Senate. If they dare to stand up for the country instead of him, he will spill the beans. Sadly the GOP cares more about them keeping their power than they do about the damage trump is doing to this country.
It's simply that this is what the Republican Party has degenerated into.

(6,414 posts)Trump is more popular than anyone in the party.
There will be no coup.

(65,168 posts)Unless he bails, he's the nominee.
And the odds of him bailing are almost as low as the nomination being pulled.
