Since the Missouri State Fair first began in 1901, it has only been canceled once.
I dont want to be the governor that makes it the second time, Parson said.
We see the continuation of the state fair as part of Gov. Parsons plan to reopen the state, Chris Chinn, director of the Department of Agriculture.
Fair planners have canceled concerts, but that is primarily because many bands have stopped touring during the global pandemic.
Events that draw crowds, including auto racing, rodeos, tractor pulls and a cow-chip throwing contest are still on the schedule for the 11-day event, which starts Aug. 13.
It goes without saying we are stepping up our game on our cleaning efforts to make sure we do everything we can to protect the public, Chinn said. Weve purchased additional hand sanitizing stations.
Typically, about 340,000 people attend the fair each year, depending on the weather.
Chinn said one factor to consider is Sedalia and its location. In other states, the fairs are in larger, more densely populated urban areas."

(30,761 posts)When my daughter was younger, she usually had something on exhibit for the 4-H Fair. She was great at growing houseplants and baking. She will never forget those experiences.
After they grew up, we started attending the Governor's Day brunch regularly. (It is Democrat's Day when a republican is governor).
They have great speakers. Last year's speaker was Nancy Pelosi. We have had Al Franken and other luminaries. The year we were supposed to have Biden, he had laryngitis. We had Buttigieg instead. He was wonderful. Of course, we have all the Illinois politicians. We go the day before so we can meet everyone. The event is held to thank the foot soldiers, like my husband and me. We are the people who serve on our county central committees, register voters, serve as election judges, phone bankers, canvassers, etc.
I hope we can have Governor's Day again, within my lifetime.
Missouri is asking for trouble. I hate having my life so restricted, but I would like to keep on living it. Why can't they believe science?
