back to 50 year old Justice Dept opinion which may or may not be effective.

The question is "who can fire a court appointed US Attorney" and it has never been properly answered.

By law, the AG can appoint an interim U.S. Attorney for 120 days. At the end of that time, the court can appoint that person indefinitely, which is what happened. So, because Berman was appointed by the US District Court for the SDNY and not the president, he apparently cannot be removed except by the court, but not by Barr. If Trump says Barr fired him and not Trump himself, this will wind up in court.
