Swimming with the sharks: What progressives can learn from Republicans Against Trump

[link:https://www.politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2020/06/22/swimming-with-the-sharks-what-progressives-can-learn-from-re|

We've always known that conservatives have the campaigning instincts of sharks. But it's rare for progressives to see their techniques being used against a common enemy, rather than ourselves.

As dual UK-US nationals who work in communication, we have become obsessed with the Never Trumpers who are going all in to get Donald Trump out in November.

Snip

Be ruthless
The Never Trumpers might as well have written the phrase 'go big or go home'. For them there is no Plan B, so there is an intensity and relentlessness about their approach.
They act quickly and opportunistically through their attack ads, frames and messages and react to and lead conversations in real time.

Snip

Target your efforts
Never Trumpers target their time and money at the 15 or so battleground states where the election will be won or lost and ignore the national polls.

Within these states, they don't talk to the Democrats, they talk to the people they need to convert: swing voters, conservatives who also hate Trump or those who voted for him in 2016 but are feeling uneasy about him now.

Snip

Values matter more than policy or facts
Republicans Voters Against Trump is a master class in low budget values campaigning. The videos are shot on smart phones or computers. And they are effective because they are unpolished peer to peer testimonials that speak to core conservative morals, values and identity frames.

Words that come up a lot are responsibility, character, authority, respect, decency, faith, honour and integrity. Unsurprisingly, for all these ex-GOP voters, Trump has none of these qualities. For many, Biden does. They will vote for him because he's a man of character not because they agree with his policies.

So much more at link. Very interesting article.

Be consistent, employ message discipline

Snip

The Never Trumpers pick a theme and keep hammering away at it so that it sticks.

Some key examples are #AmericaOrTrump, where they tried to pin the Confederate flag on him, and more recently #Trumpisnotwell and #PlagueRally to describe Trump's Tulsa rally.
The Lincoln Project and their founders have significant online reach. Both George Conway and Rick Wilson have over a million followers. The media of course tunes into Twitter, and these messages then get currency, are amplified, and stick.

At the moment the Never Trumpers are on our side because they believe in the fundamentals of democracy and the rule of law. But the reason why they want the Republican party to be demolished at the polls in 2020, is so that they can rebuild it from the ground up to once again look more like the Reagan GOP of the 1980s. That means eventually they'll be targeting - and beating - progressives again.

Snip

As a result, we'd do well to watch what they are doing between now and November and internalise some of the lessons they are teaching us, so that we don't become shark bait next time we meet.

So I fixed it for ya.
I see people here often referring to 'please copy the headline as it appears in the article', without our own embellishments.

That's all I was pointing out.

dems have long ways to go in learning how to do it right. Very good points raised - focus on battleground states, do not focus on dems - you already got them. Be bold, crass, focused and repeat, repeat, repat; that’s how you control the message and media narrative. We saw even fox news wasnt willing to lie about tulsa rally success; this would not be happening w/o lincoln project.

🤪
Democrats seem to be rolling along just fine.
Biden swept the primaries on less cash than others, & he's in a good position for Nov, considering the opposition.

imagine what lincoln project ads would do to susan collins. negative campaigning works, it’s the only way gop is able to win anything. we need bold non stop ads that destroy her character. attack the character not just policies. I havent seen any ads like that against collins yet even though there is plenty of material. Now is a perfect time, collins is an accomplice of economic depression and pandemic response. You don’t even need to have a dem candidate for this. just negative ads that use bold, shocking language with unflattering imagery.

MediasTouch, Lincoln Project, & TeaPain, has jumped in the fray as well, just to name a few.
There are more & they're all welcome at this point.
This is an all out effort & it's no wonder Trump repeatedly talks about silencing media against him.
We are not having any of that.

MediasTouch has enlisted Hollywood writers & producers to use their professional skills in creating ads against Trump. And they have not disappointed.

Our strategists are into grand images, and hypotheticals. They use big words when smaller, better known words work much better. They are resistant to jumping in a pit and wrestling a pig because they will just get dirty and the pig will enjoy it.

The Never Trumpers and like minded republicans are perfectly fine with jumping in the pit with that pig because they envision porkchops, ham and bacon at the end of it all. They are not afraid to throw a punch, except for James Carvill, our side is.

Dems have a chance to watch what these Republican groups are doing, how they target and make these ads so effective. For once we are not in defensive mode because the Never Trumpers like Wilson and Conway et al are on our side. They hate Trump as much as we do and are convinced another 4 years of the Trumpster and his enablers will bring the country to ruin.

Btw, Wilson in particular has repeated again and again: Forget the national polls; it's all about the swing states, the electoral college. I think most Dems have gotten that message this time out.

He's also said that elections are not won on policy but on the values thing, and that this election will be a referendum on Donald Trump. From what I've read, the Trump campaign knows the referendum deal is a loser for them. It's why they're desperate to tag something negative to Biden, something to beat him over the head with. So far? They haven't found an effective branding. Sleepy Joe doesn't do it and the accusation that Biden has a mental deficit has fallen flat. Accusing Biden of being a wild-eyed Leftie is almost funny. So, that's not convincing.

They are a campaign looking for a message with a bewigged albatross tied to their necks. LOL.

Meanwhile, outfits like the Lincoln Project keep pounding away. And that's a very good thing.
