They amplify the signal.
This is worse socially, but no less true than a lot of things student so.
I'm forced to evaluate on truthfulness. Not on perceived social value or harm. When I smack down (gently and discretely) a student for being in error about one thing, if they know about something else where the student was equally unaware of the relationship between his/her speech and the facts telling them that "well, it's more socially important" doesn't quite sit well.
It's a science class where we speak truth, not a class where we speak Truth (tm). Although I have had students want more activism ("we need a *black* Ohm's law, one that reflects our truth!" Okay, where's the vomit emoji ...)
