Top GOP senator fears Trump is 'soft' with independents, urges shift in strategy

The remarks by Sen. John Thune come amid sliding presidential poll numbers that have sparked concern among Republican leaders.

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Whip John Thune sounded the alarm Wednesday that President Donald Trump's support among independent voters was "soft," urging a change in strategy in light of a New York Times survey that showed the president trailing Democrat Joe Biden by double digits.

The Times/Siena national poll found Biden winning 50 percent of registered voters, with Trump winning 36 percent. Among independents, Biden led by a substantial 18 points.

"Right now, obviously Trump has a problem with the middle of the electorate, with independents, and they're the people who are undecided in national elections," Thune, R-S.D., told reporters in the Capitol. "I think he can win those back, but it'll probably require not only a message that deals with substance and policy but I think a message that conveys, perhaps, a different tone."

In 2016, Trump won independent voters by 6 points, according to exit polls compiled by NBC News.

An observation from a Twitter user:

Text: For him to say this kind of thing in public means they know their Senate majority is probably gone. It’s a heads-up to colleagues that the OK to distance from Trump is imminent.

Interesting. Wishful thinking? Or is he onto something? It goes without saying, Trump will be unable to "switch tone."

His only growth and development is to be four years older.

"growth" of his belt size, maybe.

"growth" of his jowls.

zero "growth" of his character and compassion.

I think about the challenges I have had in my marriage (everybody has them) and how we have had to work through difficulties. There were times when my husband had trouble admitting that he was wrong, but we worked it out. I cannot imagine being married to a man who will never admit an error and, obviously, will never apologize. (OK. So there are other things that make me barf about the concept of being married to that creep.....)

I said it on another thread about a week ago, and I will say it again.

Trump is the same stupid ass, racist, sexist, jerk that he was from before he came down the escalator. The only "changes in tone" that he has "displayed" where when the media spun the fact that he didn't take out his tiny mushroom and wave it around, as a sign that he was being more "presidential". He has never changed his tone himself.

There are two Trump modes. 1. The fake, drugged out, reading in a monotone voice, "because I have to" Trump. AND 2. The jack ass that insults people, says racist things, asks about injecting solvents, praises himself, and denies all responsibility for things he clearly did. #2 is the real Trump.

That is it.

The problem for Republicans is that Trump is vindictive too. Any disloyalty will be met with attacks. They had their chance to vote him out of office during impeachment and they failed. They are tied to him. It is something that each Democratic opponent needs to say when/if the Republicans start to distance themselves. Republicans painted themselves into a corner by sticking with Trump. They own him or are owned by him and they need to be tied to him so they go down together.

...after only seeing 6k people in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he's freaking out that he may have lost his base. And of course that base thinks, they don't need no stinking independents.

I've seen the same attitude here on DU, condemn, eviscerate, alienate, etc. the independents. And guess what happens? We lose the big elections, every single time. Just because your enclave is solid blue doesn't mean everyone else is.
