DC and Puerto Rico statehood are possible in 2020

Last edited Wed Jun 24, 2020, 11:10 PM - Edit history (1)

I don't know if people realize how simple the statehood process is.

1. Express an interest (often through referendum) (Completed by both territories)
2. Order territory to create a state constitution
3. Accept the state into the union via congressional vote and presidential approval.

"Congress then directed that government to organize a constitutional convention to write a state constitution. Upon acceptance of that constitution, by the people of the territory and then by Congress, Congress would adopt a joint resolution granting statehood and the President would issue a proclamation announcing that a new state has been added to the Union."

Statehood can happen for DC and Puerto Rico if we can pull off a massive win in 2020.

I don't think it will happen that quick. Republicans risk adding four democratic senators. 33taw Jun 2020 #3

I want all my fellow Americans to have the same rights enjoyed by those in the 50 states. It’s the right thing to do.

So outrageous. If they move to a US state, they can vote, but not if they stay in PR.

I'm not sure if it can be filibustered or if there will be a filibuster in 2021.

Congress gets to decide whether we accept the new state? Moscow Mitch? No way he would get behind that idea.

I think it's a great idea, and DC especially should be granted statehood. Look how the Idiot-in-Chief has been flexing his Federal Muscles in DC in the past month. He wouldn't be able to do that if it were a state.

So the federal district would be the White House, Congress, and some parks and monuments? DC keeps everything else? Or would everything belong to DC?

The federal courthouse, the central post office, the offices.

I think they're all exempt from property tax in my state!
