JUST IN: Austin/Travis County officials say that the new cases of the virus we're seeing are from people not isolating or wearing face masks
"If we do not make significant change right now, then we are going to be in a situation within the next week to two weeks where I'm going to have to make the recommendation to the Mayor and Judge that we shut down, and I do not want to do that," said Austin Travis County Interim Health Authority Dr. Mark Escott.
Dr. Escott, joined by other medical professionals in the Central Texas region in a virtual Q&A, is pleading for the public to get serious about social distancing, wearing a mask, and staying home as much as possible.

(823 posts)Why don't they just have the Sergeant at Arms warn him, then throw him the hell out when he doesn't comply. Same thing with the dickhead from Texas tapping on his desk. THROW THEM OUT. They want to act like children? Send them to the principal's office. No need for all of the good congressmen and women to have to suffer these assholes.

(However, I do object to the swiping at Democrats. Seems to be an awful lot of that thrown around here. )
Here. The answer to my question.

(11,360 posts)We call the liquid form "water". I have never in my life heard anyone complain that they slipped on a patch of water on a cold winter morning. I have never heard a locomotive called a "water engine".
This is the last I will post on this topic, as it is irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Sorry.
water [ waw-ter, wot-er ]
noun
1. a transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid, a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, H2O, freezing at 32°F or 0°C and boiling at 212°F or 100°C, that in a more or less impure state constitutes rain, oceans, lakes, rivers, etc.: it contains 11.188 percent hydrogen and 88.812 percent oxygen, by weight.
2. a special form or variety of this liquid, as rain.

(21,481 posts)challenged the comment about water being wet was a bit nit-picking and unnecessary. In its liquid state, the commonly used term is water. In its gaseous state, the commonly used term is vapor or steam. In its solid form the common word is ice.
Since this is a general discussion forum and not a science one, people will use common terms and properties. Saying that water is wet seems perfectly acceptable to me.
aggiesal
(8,916 posts)I never said water is NOT wet.
Stating water is NOT wet would have challenged the comment.
I just said that water can be solid or steam.
No degradation intended or implied.
Purely informational.
Mister Ed
(5,938 posts)Water in its gaseous form is water vapor, not steam. Steam is small droplets of liquid water suspended in air. It's not a gas.
It's a common misperception, but my high school science teacher never let it go uncorrected.
aggiesal
(8,916 posts)And the link I supplied in earlier post, specifically stated that steam is a form of gaseous water.

(53,784 posts)down on the other side of the arc. It's a damn shame that repug governors in the south and west followed the idiotic leadership of trump with his no-mask policy, and then re-opened early without adhering to the CDC policies of 14-day downturns of infections.
The result is the all the western and southern states are spiking back to April infection rates.
trump is the reason we are where we are. It's almost criminal as to the number of deaths, deaths that were avoidable.

And here in NY, we had the packed protests but so far there has been no spike, and I think it's because everyone here wears masks.
Be OCD, get exercise and take excellent care of yourself so you don't get some other illness during the surge.
Mask everywhere.
Also, put some food by in case deliveries get interrupted. I think it is going to last in these spiking places longer than it did for us.
I know what you are facing right now, and I really feel for you. Be careful and you will weather this. I wish you safety and health.

(62,530 posts)but the issue is the dumb asses in my state, including my asshole gov abbott, choose not to wear them. I think, primarily out of spite for... I have no fucking earthly idea.
My GF and I have been in shelter in place since march 16th and we wear masks everywhere. And we only do curbside service.
the weird looks we were getting upto and through the memorial day holiday was mind boggling.
3 weeks ago, I had to go to whole foods to pick up a bulk 50 pound bag of flour. all the employees were wearing masks, but when I started to leave, I saw people coming in without them.
I go to the manager and I said, there are people coming in without masks. ( I was pissed and loud).
And he said, "it's optional for the public".
I let out a loud, "what the fuck? then what's the point".
then I sad, with that kind of policy, I'm not shopping here ever again.
and here we are. just so much stupidity in this state.
My GF and I had seen the writing on the wall and have ordered a bunch of stuff in bulk and vacuum sealed it. This winter will be really bad.

(5,801 posts)Americas Red States Have Coronavirus Numbers As Catastrophic as the Worlds Poorest Countries
Theres a strange and grim thing happening in America. Well, another one. Call it the Red States of Coronavirus.
Red states are seeing rises in Coronavirus so explosive they rival or are greater than the worlds poorest, devastated countries.
Yes, really. Florida had 4000 new cases yesterday. Just Florida alone!
Pakistan the entire country had 5000 cases. Floridas population is 21 million. Pakistans population is 212 million. On a per capita basis, that means that Florida alone has about ten times as many new cases as Pakistan.
Pakistan is one of the worlds poorest, most devastated, dysfunctional countries.
And yet Florida alone is outdoing it in terms of acceleration in Coronavirus.
My God. Are you seeing the surreal, absurd, bizarre, shocking scale of this yet what I mean by the Red States of Coronavirus?

(10,007 posts)Remember that Austin is home to one of the chief wing nuts, Alex Jones. Most of the people Ive seen without masks here are young people. Ive also seen a number of road repair/construction crews without masks. Since theyre working outside, Im sure masks are hot. Our governor needs to stop sucking up to Trump and mandate masks in public.
cannabis_flower
(3,764 posts)It's all that necessary for road crews to be wearing masks. Unless they are working in close contact. Most of the time you will see one directing traffic and two or three digging. They are usually spaced more than 10 or 12 feet apart. They should at least have masks in case they need to work near each other and use them in those instances.

(11,563 posts)The mortality rates for most states is appalling, and there is less concern in many of them, because NY's numbers are ghastly.
There are 4 states that have a lower mortality rate per 100K than BC, where I live - Alaska, Wyoming, Hawaii and Montana. Hawaii, of course, is isolated, and social distancing in the other 3 is just a way of life.
And yet signs of people getting with the program are not encouraging. A sea change in attitudes and behaviors is VITAL. I don't think I'm being hysterical to suggest that staying on the course currently charted could mean damage to society that will be massive and more or less permanent.
If these trends continue, even a compassionate government is going to have to throw people to the wolves. Maintaining support at even a tiny facsimile of "our" way of life for 10's of millions of people is beyond unsustainable.
I am very worried about this news.
crickets
(25,981 posts)is that they know the shutdown should already be in place. What they are really handwringing about is the lack of strength and integrity to go ahead and take proper action, knowing that the longer they mess around, the more people will die. And still they talk but do not act.
IronLionZion
(45,447 posts)too many people in too many places have it and are spreading it through willful disregard for basic common sense.
The shutdowns were to buy time for a national test, trace, isolate program that never came. Selfish greedy assholes want their stock profits but don't want to pay unemployment for workers or any type of rent/mortgage relief for homes or small businesses.

(9,150 posts)Anecdotally, we have heard reports. Ive certainly seen a decrease in the social distancing and mask-wearing at places where I have been, and its important for the community to understand, Escott said. And theyre very confused because we are in an election year, and I think in many circumstances the publics being told You have to choose public health or the economy those are the only two choices, and thats simply not true.
So no, the increase in cases has not been proven to be because people are not wearing masks, but if they haven't been (which also jibes with what I've seen lately), it is logical to assume unmasked interaction increases the spread of the disease.
