The U. S. economy was hemorrhaging jobs — it lost 818,000 jobs that month alone, and it would lose 4.2 million more over the course of that year. Add to that the 3.6 million jobs lost in 2008, with unemployment expected to continue to rise as far into the future as anyone could see, and the American economy was in free fall. Economists were looking at a $2 trillion "output gap"
