For 14th straight week, unemployment filings top 1 million

Roughly 47 million Americans have filed initial unemployment claims since mid-March -- a total unlike anything the country has seen in modern times.

In March, everything changed with data that was staggering and record breaking. That said, in nearly every week since, the total number has taken rather significant steps in a less harrowing direction. This morning, the Department of Labor released a report that was even more disappointing than expect.

Keep the cumulative effects in mind: these 1.48 million Americans who've just filed for jobless benefits are in addition to the totals from the last few weeks. In other words, roughly 47 million Americans have filed initial unemployment claims since mid-March -- a total unlike anything the country has seen in modern times. - MSNBC

of the $600 in Fed benefits provided by the CARE Act. That is, unless the Senate agrees to the already passed House bill to extend the benefit to the end of January, 2021.

mortgages, cars and credit cards...what have. you The Senate will extend the money... This is an election year and they are in charge. They can't screw a Democratic president this time. The pugs don't give two damns about Americans. I am hoping that self interest will forced them to do the right thing for the wrong reasons. They sent no help to the people in 08. President Obama managed to save us anyway... Of course, this year is much worse than 08. These are depression numbers of unemployment...not seen since the 1930's. These people ( and my husband and I are among them) are not going back to their jobs...the jobs are gone. And we have a continuing pandemic and civil unrest. If something isn't down, we will have food riots.

My wife was on unemployment as well - she’s back at work as a cosmetologist, making a bit less than she was while on UI. I am making slightly less on UI than I was working, but my (small) expense account from my work is also inoperative right now, so that adds to gap in what I was earning and what I am receiving in UI benefits.

Like you, I have no prospect of returning to work any time soon. That $600 a week is pretty much all that’s keeping us from the poor house.

Fingers crossed that the Senate does the right thing.
