A barista at Starbucks earned himself quite the pay day for simply enforcing the store's face mask policy.
Lenin Gutierrez, a barista at a Starbucks in San Diego was publicly admonished by a woman named Amber Lynn Gilles in a Facebook post on Monday, after Gutierrez refused to serve her for not wearing a mask inside of the coffee shop.
Giles shared a photograph of Gutierrez wearing his Starbucks apron and a face mask with the caption: "Meet lenen [sic] from Starbucks who refused to serve me cause I'm not wearing a mask. Next time I will wait for cops and bring a medical exemption."
Since the post has gone viral, Giles' attempt to spark outrage against Gutierrez backfired. While there were some who agreed with Giles, hundreds of the more than 133,000 people who have commented on the post largely took Gutierrez's side, including a man named Matt Cowan who organized a GoFundMe on Gutierrez's behalf.

Essentially any (real) condition that makes the sensation of a mask on your face unbearable, any condition that either makes it difficult for you to breathe - or difficult for you to use the oxygen your body does take in when you breathe.
In the perhaps less critical area - people with muscular coordination (CP for example) for whom putting on and taking off a mask to eat or drink might be unhealthy (e.g. causing dehydration because the difficulty of removing and putting on mask discourages taking in adequate nutrition or hydration)

(51,308 posts)I had awful asthma as a child, but with meds for years, I outgrew it. It returns occasionally in cold weather.
It seems those folks are best to stay at home with conditions so serious they can't wear a mask.
I wear one when I go out, but I'm never in a store longer than 20 minutes. I don't like the mask, but I'm quite sure I'd like a ventilator even less.

(34,086 posts)I have friends with young children with autism - in places where masks are mandated - who are really struggling. Even if they have a medical exemption, they are subject to challenge every place they go. The fact that there are idiots like this woman pretending to have a medical exemption makes it harder because the current assumption is that if you aren't wearing a mask it is a political statement (rather than an assumption that you have a medical basis for not wearing one). They are working with variations on masks (fabric, design) that can be tolerated for brief periods that are easy to pull up when needed.
I agree with you that most of the people who should not be wearing masks for medical reasons should probably just be staying home.

(51,308 posts)I've worked with folks with autism, and I hadn't thought about that.
I do appreciate the list. And yes...all these idiot pretending to have "medical reasons" are causing problems for those who do. What a country.

Otherwise ... yeah.

Now nondisabled scammers want you to believe that the ADA protects them from having to wear a face mask in public. Dont believe them.
An outfit calling itself the Freedom to Breathe Agency (both its Wix website and Facebook group have now been taken down) has been distributing a Face Mask Exempt Card designed to be presented to businesses. The card reads: I am exempt from any ordinance requiring face mask usage in public. Wearing a face mask poses a mental and/or physical risk to me. Under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), I am not required to disclose my condition to you. The card also features the seal of the U.S. Department of Justice and the threat If found in violation of the ADA you could face steep penalties. Organizations and businesses can be fined up to $75,000 for your first violation and $150,000 for any subsequent violations.
That might sound vaguely convincing if you arent familiar with the ADA. But its all nonsensethe Department of Justice has called the cards fraudulent. And its dangerous nonsense at that.
First, when were considering face masks, the ADA applies only to people who are actually disabled. It is absolutely true that there are people who cannot wear a face mask because they have a disability. And while there is no sort of master list of ADA-approved reasons for not wearing a mask, to give just a few examples, they may include people with COPD, asthma, cystic fibrosis, PTSD, and autism. These are the people the ADA is designed to protectpeople who are actually disabled. The ADA does not apply to ableds lying about disability in order to spread a disease that disproportionately kills members of marginalized groupse.g., the Black, Latinx, indigenous, poor, and, yes, disability communities.
