Gun Maker Remington Preps for Bankruptcy, Seeks Sale to Navajo Nation

Firearms manufacturer Remington Arms Co. is preparing to file for chapter 11 protection for the second time since 2018 and is in advanced talks for potential bankruptcy sale to the Navajo Nation, people familiar with the matter said.

The bankruptcy filing could come within days as the gun maker makes preparations for the Navajo Nation to serve as the lead bidder to purchase Remington’s assets out of chapter 11, these people said. Founded in 1816, Remington’s namesake weapons are mainstays in hunting, shooting sports, law enforcement and the military.

The Navajo Nation—a territory with roughly 175,000 people across parts of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico—could finalize a bid for Remington as soon as Friday, one of the people said. Any bid for the company would be subject to competing offers and require bankruptcy-court approval.

Despite cutting some $775 million in debt through the 2018 bankruptcy, Remington has continued to face high interest costs and operational issues, according to people familiar with the matter, and expensive litigation surrounding the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

I would love to see the tribe take Remington back to what it once was. Starting with getting the hell out of the NRA, the assault rifle and handgun business.

Their guns are considered old and unfashionable now, meanwhile AR15 sales are skyrocketing through the roof.

They built them with longer, heavier barrels and in camo dip to appeal to hunters. They also tried to create propriety cartridges for them, such as the .30 RAR, in an effort to make them more appealing as hunting firearms.

Both never saw big sales because most hunters want bolt action rifles, and most AR owners want shorter, lighter tactical rifles.

financial drain on the Navajo Nation. Buying Bankrupt Coal Mines just pleased the Billionaire White Guys and the Cash drain has to be monstrous. Same will happen for Remington.

the Tribal President is a truly POS. He has not helped the Navajo Nation with their problems of basic needs like Water,Communications or even any type of Employment needs.

BTW,he was in Phoenix all smiley faced with Pascale,Eric Trump, and other White House talking Freaks.

Big Box,and many of our Customers were from the Navajo Res. One gets to know the families and many of the Elders. Have been away some seven years now and when certain names come up in the media, just can not feel the anguish that is happening in real time for most of the Tribal members. One of our Cashiers Father was a Elder so many of us were invited to various Tribal celebrations. The one way drive is almost 175 miles or more to the events .

And yes,the Tribal officials tend to be conservative.

The model 700 and 870 were hugely popular for decades but they lagged when the market shifted after 9/11. They never had a big or popular handgun lineup/market share either.

I worked for Remington 15 years and saw a lot while I was there. Remington is a victim of Mitt Romney style vulture capitalism. Cerberus Capital, a New York City based private equity firm, bought Remington in 2007 and immediately started to load the company with debt. When Obama got elected president gun and ammunition sales went thru the roof overnight. We couldn't put in enough hours or make enough ammunition fast enough to meet demand. It was a gravy train situation for years after and the company expanded operations as though the good times would last forever. Democratic presidents are good for the gun industry as the NRA cranks up its propaganda machine and scaring people into buying more guns and ammo. When it looked like Hillary would be elected president the company geared up for a new wave of panic buying. When trump won the election, the bottom fell out of gun demand. The weakened NRA could no longer push the story of the dems taking their guns away. We saw sales and production sharply reduced. Now hit with plummeting sales revenue, Remington was unable to pay the huge debt it was saddled with when Cerberus bought the company. It was no surprise to see the company fail. I retired from the company three years ago. I could see the writing on the wall. Everyone could. It was only a matter of time.
