Freepers defending Mitt:
"I collect S.S. and never thought he was referring to me. Anybody with a grain of sense knows who he was talking about."
"Thats right; everyone knows exactly the type of people hes talking about. Leeches."
"Yeah, I know, you dont want to alienate a potential voter. But I know hes not talking about people down on their luck and need help, or those disabled and require help.
Hes talking about the people who could and should work but feel theyre entitled to using the system to stay perpetually on food stamps and handouts. Theyre leeches."

That guy gets disability for being blind. Why can't I get disability for not being able to see reality>? It's discrimination!

(916 posts)Those kind of leeches? Maybe if "smart" people supported the republican party, they might understand the meaning of the word "irony".

(25,415 posts)(TANF) he needed to say 1.7%. Stupid, stupid people who don't use facts. Leeching off society at 1.7%. So many people. All 4 million of them.

(1,574 posts)should know who he was talking about. The repubs hate Obama so much they are falling over themselves trying to spin this.

(22,336 posts)He wasn't talking about me, as my family pays quite a bit in federal income tax, and I'm someone who will vote for Obama no matter what. He was talking about someone. Actually he was talking about a lot of people, and I know this is partly another race baiting dog whistle and all, but 47% of Americans aren't African American so he didn't mean that.

(27,985 posts)47%. Yeah, he was including them.

(14,177 posts)So if you are a full time student whose only income is a Pell Grant and student loans then you are a leach even though you have to pay back the loan. And this is even though you are trying to get an education so you that you fall out of the group of people who pay no federal income taxes. Because if you don't ever get an education there is a good chance you may never in your lifetime pay much if anything for federal income taxes. Unfortunately all other taxes are regressive.

(18,672 posts)It's all about them if it's good, and about someone else if it's bad. If they have to collect unemployment, it's because they've worked hard and earned it. If someone else has to, they refer to them as "lazy" among other slurs. Some people believe what they want to believe, and have created incredible filters to insulate their tiny world. Sometimes I wish I could do that. It's frustrating having to deal with people like this because no matter how many facts or how good of an argument you present, you'd get better leeway talking to a brick wall.

(6,837 posts)As I said in a DU post that got zero responses:
That kind of makes sense, in a twisted way. I have seen studies that show conservatives tend to greatly over-estimate the size of the black population and tend to assume almost all of them are on welfare. A lot of base GOP voters also assume incorrectly that virtually all undocumented workers get welfare checks.
So, given all that, I can see where Mitt's comments could actually help him -- in a "dog whistle" sort of way -- with the GOP base.
Will independents feel the same way? Only time will tell, but I am guessing they won't.

(12,712 posts)value of Bog Mittens is priceless in the sense that it keeps on perpetuating myths that they hope people will latch-onto and believe.
That seems to provide an impetus for condoning the ending of any helpful or compassionate means to uplift people in need, no matter how miniscule the remaining help is. It also serves to make people who are nearing dire need to feel bad about and avoid seeking help.
Molding an Ayn Rand sculpture of self-centered decay takes as many strikes of that hammer as they can get away with. None of it goes to waste, no matter how we may point out facts and deride the lunacy.
