Apparently under the belief that your compassion is a finite quantity that might easily run out, and so must be parcelled out only to the deserving. I think you're right, there's something pitiable about them. OTOH, getting their asses handed to them in the election might just be the character-building experience the Republicans need to grow up as mature, patriotic Americans.
