Who would *want* to release this video of Romney?

Obviously it was someone who was not a fan of Romney. But what kind of political opponent could've gotten this close to a high dollar, elite meet-the-candidate fundraiser? The video shows someone meeting in a very small group with the isolated, bubble-bound Republican candidate.

One possibility is it's a pro-Obama family member of the zillionnaire who Romney was ass-blowing for some campaign scratch. Zillionnaire Jr lurking on the balcony, videographing one moneyshot while the candidate shmoos up Zillionnaire Sr for another kind of moneyshot. If this is the case, then this family has a pretty interesting Thanksgiving dinner to look forward too.

Another possibility is it's a Ron Paulie-slash-libertarian who wants the GOP to crash and burn so the zero-government types can take over the party in 2016.

A more extreme theory is that it's a true blue conservative who shot & released the tape (the Mother Jones writer was implying the video shooter released it only reluctantly). If that's the case, I wonder if he/she has an agenda that involved Romney stepping down from the campaign, creating a scenario where the RNC has to reconvene suddenly (like the Dems did in 1972) to appoint a replacement nominee.

The last hypothesis I'll offer is that it's a Christian Fundy who is reviled by the fact that his party nominated a cultist and a Catholic for the national ticket. No matter how bad I want to see the Republicans tank, I'd really hate it if it was religious bigotry that drove this leak.

It wouldn't be that difficult for a server with a tiny camera to record the whole thing.

I've worked catering gigs. It'd be very unusual for service staff to have the spare time & isolation that close to a Secret Service guarded VIP. In fact, since Romney's under federal security right now, I think it'd be damn dangerous for the help to try to smuggle in a metallic or electronic device into that setting and then use it surreptitiously in literal shootin' distance of the candidate.

It's almost gotta be someone on the 1% side of that scene.

so it could have been anyone from the manager of the hotel to the catering staff.

We owe a debt to whoever did this. If they ever find out who it was, that person will likely be unemployable in that industry for the rest of his or her life.

He filmed it as a hedge in case Romney's campaign began falling apart, or perhaps he just wanted to keep a record of the talk. When his fears became realized, he shopped the video around in snippets on YouTube. Trolling for offers if you will. That offer materialized in the form of Jimmy Carter's grandson, who procured the full video in hi-res.

I'm sure it's nothing personal to Romney, it's just business. The 1%er had to reclaim some of his wasted donation, and Romney would take the fall. Ayn Rand would be very proud.

it could have been the host, or one of the guests, or as you said a family member. My theory based on the position of the camera behind the carafe of wine, is that it was the help.
