Because this is comparing the number this week to the number last week, you can be quite bad and not be dark red. Meanwhile, assuming that the days used were the last 14 in the NYT data, a state doing well that correctly gets a cluster by doing a great job contract tracing, can like Vermont be red. If you look at the NYT graph, we quickly lowered the curve and had weeks where the cases were below 10.

If the dates were the last 14, the reason Vermont is red is that there were 23 cases over the previous week. This week was higher. However, the per capita cases were still few.

If a highly populated state is doing continuous testing, it is pretty hard to decrease your new cases by over 50% in a week; just as if you are a low populated state and have a couple of clusters it could be easy to become over 50% change of cases in one week, then under 50% the next week.

If states just stopped testing, like idiot Trump suggests, the number of cases would go down, but we all know that does NOT mean the spread has plateaued or stopped.

A better statistic is to look at is hospitalizations or deaths due to COVID-19. Florida is no longer providing info on deaths. That is worrisome.

Or, look to see if these new case maps correlate with hospitalization increases in about two weeks.

7. I agree that hospitalizations and deaths are a better indicator,

except that in GA and many other states, the new cases are largely young adults who do not have severe symptoms but can be infecting older adults.

.

There's map you can zoom in on and click on the county to get stats.

There's a tally below that,

There's a State table that you can drill down to the county and the charts to the right will adjust based on the settings you want.
