Federal officials are launching an investigation into the zoo made famous in Netflix's "Tiger King" series after pictures surfaced allegedly showing lions neglected, injured, and with maggots and flies infesting their ears.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says it received three photos and one video sent to by a whistleblower that allegedly show lions at The Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma suffering from severe "flystrike" a condition caused by flies laying eggs on other animals, which eventually hatch into maggots that eat flesh.
"Veterinarians who observed the documentation have opined that the wounds would be extremely painful and that if the lions aren't appropriately treated immediately, they risk losing their ears," PETA wrote in a statement.
The Garvin County Sheriff's Office said the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) have both visited the park to investigate after receiving a series of complaints about animal welfare, according to a release issued on Facebook.

(CNN)Carole Baskin, whose longstanding feud with Joe Exotic was chronicled in the hit Netflix docuseries "Tiger King," has been awarded the zoo once owned by her nemesis.
A judge ruled in favor of Baskin's Big Cat Rescue Corporation Monday in a lawsuit against the Greater Wynnewood Development Group, LLC. The latter company once was owned by Exotic, whose real name is Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage.
The order gives Baskin control of about 16 acres of land in Garvin County, Oklahoma, that is home to an animal park with an array of big cats.
GWDC must "vacate the Zoo Land premises within 120 days of service of this Order ...Vacation of premises shall also require removal of all zoo animals from the Zoo Land," the court order said.

I wonder if the assholes who have been running the zoo thought that any problems with the animals would be "discovered" after she took it on and that she would be blamed on deficiencies? The way they demonized her in past years makes that a possibility in my mind. Revenge is more valuable to them than the animals they claim to love.

(26,355 posts)Baskin sued them into oblivion. I just hope they're able to save the cats. I know some of them came our direction to Colorado, and ended up in the wildlife sanctuary near Keenesburg.

(34,136 posts)But I do think that some of the employees care about the animals.
If the maggots are the kind we used to get on horses, they can be treated and prevented from coming back. I bought a stallion in 1979 that had an infestation of maggots on his belly. Poor thing had been badly neglected and was underweight as well as having maggots.
All we needed to do was to treat him with ivermectin de-wormer and keep the wound clean. In a few months you couldn't tell where it had been.

(12,480 posts)If she is not abusive and has the means to give them a good life..
I'm sceptical that she's any saner than the monster she married.
All I want is for all the cats there to be taken care of and be loved and have good lives. Lives free of abuse and neglect..

(34,136 posts)Carol Baskin is currently married to Howard Baskin. They live in Florida and have their own big cat rescue group.
She was portrayed as a murdering monster by Joe Exotic since she was fighting the "pay to play" business that Exotic ran. Even though it is illegal, Exotic also was known to sell big cat kittens. Carol Baskin tried to stop Exotic and he made her his target. That is her only connection with Exotic other than her lawsuit against him for copyright infringement for using her business name and logo - which she won and was awarded his zoo.
Howard Baskin married into this mess in 2004. How is he a monster?

(12,480 posts)I get upset when any cat suffers. I adore cats big or small.
Baskin I hope gives the cats good lives.
Glad tiger king asshole is away from the cats. Hopefully forever.

(34,136 posts)Unfortunately for Carol Baskin, she will always be associated in people's minds with Joe Exotic.
I don't know if she is better, but her public stance is that big cats should not be trafficked or kept as pets. Here is her web site: https://bigcatrescue.org/

(43,185 posts)I will say this, however.
Probably the "least crazy" of the bunch was Carol Baskin, the one some people insist killed her first husband. (Although after hearing so much about how "Carol Baskin killed her husband" before actually watching the show, I was a little let down that the evidence they presented to support that claim was ultimately a little weak, in my honest opinion.)
She seemed just as much the glory hound and narcissistic as the rest of them, but the others seemed far, far more repulsive than her, especially Joe Exotic. And I'm say that even if she did in fact kill her husband.
